Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), the Wagner women's lacrosse team wound up on the short end of a 17-14 decision this evening at Hameline Field.
With the loss, the Seahawks conclude their non-conference record with a 2-7 mark and will open Northeast Conference (NEC) play on Friday, April 8 at home vs. Central Connecticut in a 4:00 p.m. start. Following today's victory, the Lions of the Ivy League even their season record at 5-5.
After falling behind 1-0, Wagner went on a 3-0 run to take an early 3-1 lead on goals by senior attacker
Tori McGrath (Delmar, NY / Bethlehem Central), Gegan and Streilein. The next 20 minutes were back and forth as the score was tied on four different occasions, at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6 before Columbia then reeled off four consecutive goals in a span of 1:23 to gain a 10-6 lead.
The Seahawks countered with goals by Gegan and senior midfielder
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) in the final minute of the opening half which made it a 10-8 game at the intermission.
The Lions scored the first two goals of the second half to regain a four-goal bulge at 12-8, and eventually built a 17-11 lead, before the Seahawks scored the game's final three goals to fashion the final score at 17-14.
Gegan finished with a game-high five points, adding two assists to her three goals, to go with five caused turnovers, four draw controls and three groundballs while Tumolo and Streilein each added one assist to finish with four points apiece. McGrath wound up with two goals while Fay, senior attacker
Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) and sophomore midfielder
Lauren Ednie (Verona, NJ/Verona) added one goal apiece.
Sara Ruzzi led the way for Columbia with four goals, finishing with three goals apiece were Lindsey Ewertsen, Victoria Kalamaras, and Mariel Teague while Jessie Ambrose chipped in with two.
In goal, Kelsey Gedin picked up the win for the Lions, recording 11 saves on the evening. For Wagner, sophomore
Lucy Darlington (Timonium, MD / Notre Dame Preparatory) gained the start in goal and recorded three first-half saves before giving way to senior
Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD/McDonogh) who came on to register six saves in the second half.
Wagner held a 38-33 edge in shots, Columbia won the draw control battle, 18-15, while teams were even at 20 groundballs apiece. The Seahawks were successful on 5-of-14 free position shots while the Lions were 5-of-11 on FPOs.
A physical battle throughout, the game featured a combined seven yellow cards.
