Video Highlights
Staten Island, NY – The Wagner men's lacrosse team battled back from a three-goal late third-quarter deficit to forge a 9-9 tie before falling to Hobart 10-9, in the Northeast Conference (NEC) opener for both teams, this afternoon at Hameline Field.
In the first three-overtime game ever for both programs, the Statesmen won it on a goal by Chris Aslaniani from in close on the right side, off an assist by Mark Darden, with 2:52 remaining in the third OT session.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 4-5 (0-1 NEC) on the season while Hobart improves to 5-3 (1-0 NEC).
Redshirt-junior
William McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep), coming off a career-high six goals vs. UMass Lowell on Wednesday, had two goals, include the game-tying score with 1:42 left in regulation that tied it at 9-9, while adding an assist. McMenamin was also 5-of-11 on faceoffs and tied for team-high honors with four ground balls. Junior faceoff specialist
Anthony Labetti was successful on 7-of-11 as Wagner eked out a 12-11 edge in the X.
Sophomore attackmen
Andrew Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Aaron Desnevich (Egg Harbor, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) finished with three (1g, 2a) and two points (2g), respectively for Wagner. Adding one goal apiece for the Seahawks were redshirt-junior attackman
Patrick McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep), to go with two assists, junior midfielder
Christian McCormick (Royersford, PA.Spring-Ford), sophomore attackman
Billy Martin (Huntington, NY/Huntington) and sophomore defender
Andrew Park (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon).
Park's first career goal was a memorable one as it came from 48 yards out on a high, lofted shot which found the net with 1:12 left in the third quarter and drew Wagner to within 7-5.
After not recording a single save in an opening half that saw Hobart jump out to a 6-4 lead, freshman goalie
Matt Sefcik (Towaco, NJ/Morristown Beard School) came up big in the second half, coming up with 10 saves after intermission, several of the point-blank variety.
Aslanian and Frank Brown led Hobart with three goals apiece while Max Romm added two. Faceoff specialist J Andrew Spallanzani went 10-of-19 in the X while goalie Jackson Brown had 11 saves.
Hobart outshot Wagner 42-33 while ground balls were dead even at 33-33. The Statesmen forced Wagner into going just 11-of-20 on clearing attempts while going 17-of-21 themselves on clears.
The Seahawks are next in action on Saturday, March 26 when they host NJIT in a 1:00 p.m. faceoff in their final non-conference contest of the season.
