Tempe, AZ – The #16(T) Wagner (15-8) women's water polo squad raced out to an 18-5 victory over the University of Redlands (2-10) and edged out #24(T) CSU Bakersfield (10-11) 13-8 to open play at the Arizona State Invitational.

Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD/ Broadneck) and
Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek) finished their opening shot opportunities to begin the offensive furry for the Green & White. The Bulldogs countered with two goals of their own to knot the game at two apiece with 5:12 remaining in the opening stanza.
The Seahawks would rally seven straight goals before Redlands tossed in a score with 10 seconds left in the first quarter to take a 9-3 lead into the second period. Lundgren would register two more scores during the run with Doerfler recording three to bring her game total to four before the end of the first quarter. Sophomore attacker
Lacey Anderson (Thousand, Oaks, CA/ Westlake) tallied twice for the Seahawks in the opening period of play including firing home on a five meter penalty shot.
Offensive opportunities continued to be plentiful in the second quarter with Wagner outscoring Redlands 5-0 in the period to bring the score to 14-3 at the half. Doerfelr would tally her fifth and sixth goals of the game in the second. Lundgren found the back of the net on an even strength score while senior
Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley) and sophomore
Elise Begg (Newbury Park, CA/ Newbury) each entered the scoring column for the day.
The Green & White would outscore the Bulldogs by a count of 4-2 in the second half to claim an 18-4 victory. Freshman
Abby Irving (Brentwood Bay, B.C. / Canadian Sports School / Stelly's) totaled a hat trick in the second half with fellow freshman
Sarah Limanni (Mohnton, PA/ Governor Mifflin) adding the final goal for Wagner.
Wagner 13 CSU Bakersfield 8 (Score Sheet)The second game of the day began with a slow pace of play as neither team managed many scoring chances in the opening frame. The Seahawks converted on two scoring opportunities in the first quarter both of which were from the right arm of
Lacey Anderson. The Green & White took a 2-0 advantage into the second period.
The Seahawks registered the first four goals of the second quarter to bring their lead to 6-0. Lundgren tallied earlier in the quarter as she hit home on a five meter penalty shot. Freshman
Erica Hardy (Montreal, Quebec/ St. Thomas) found a cutting Doerfler who struck the back of the net while Begg tossed in a score. Lundgren recorded her second of the game an even strength opportunity with 1:32 remaining in the half. CSU Bakersfield tallied two man-up goals in the final minute of play to cut the Seahawks lead to 6-2 entering the half.
Lundgren registered her third and fourth goals of the game during the third period of play. Anderson found the back of the net on a man-up chance while Doerfler fired home a strike as the Green & White totaled four scores in the third quarter. Wagner stretched their lead to 10-4 with only one quarter left to play.
The Roadrunners outscored the Seahawks 4-3 in the final frame to bring the score to 13-8. Doerfler tallied two goals in the final quarter with Rodriguez tossing in a score of her own to round out the Seahawk goals on the night.
The Seahawks are back in action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. against #9 Arizona State.
