Syracuse, NY – Senior midfielder
Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/ Manasquan) had two goals and one assist while senior attacker
Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ / Vernon Township) added one goal and one assist but the Syracuse Orange showed why they're the No. 3-ranked team as they earned a 16-5 win over Wagner today at the Carrier Dome.
Today's game was a homecoming for Seahawks' first-year head coach
Katie Rowan, who was a three-time All-American and three-year assistant coach for the Orange.
Senior Tewaaraton award finalist Kayla Treanor paced the Orange with seven points, on two goals and five assists, while
Halle Majorana and Riley Donahue contributed hat tricks.
"Bringing my team to the Carrier Dome and having them compete here and in this environment, it was special," said Rowan. "I'm proud of our team's effort. Syracuse is a realy talented team from top to bottom. They're very deep and they are just, having been on the doorstep with their senior leadership, they are just so hungry and focused this year. I think this could be certainly the year that they go all the way.''
Syracuse (3-0) scored the first nine goals of the game before Seahawk senior attacker
Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) put Wagner (0-2) on the board with a goal at the 9:07 mark of the first half off a feed from Gegan. Then, with 5:02 remaining in the opening half, senior attacker
Tori McGrath (Delmar, NY / Bethlehem Central) sank a goal off of a Peterson assist for the final score of the half as the 'Cuse took a 9-2 lead into intermission.
The Orange reeled off the first four goals of the second half before Peterson found the range on an unassisted tally with 20:43 left to make it 13-3. After Donahue and Lisa Rogers hit for consecutive Syracuse goals to make it 15-3, Gegan blasted home a pair of free-position shots during a three-minute stretch to round out the day's scoring.
Sophomore
Kelsey Fee (White Plains, NY / White Plains), a first-year Seahawk who transferred from Ithaca College where he made five starts last season, went the distance in goal, recording nine saves. Senior defender
Alexis Truxillo (Frederick, MD / St. John's Catholic Prep ) paced the Seahawks in ground balls with four, while junior defender
Amanda Rey (Turnersville, NJ / Washington Township ) collected three ground balls. Gegan was the Seahawks' team leader in draw controls with two, and was a perfect 2-of-2 on free-position shots.
Syracuse used three goalies on the afternoon as starter Allie Murray and Bri Stahrr were credited with two saves each, while Erin Coleman also saw action in goal for the 'Cuse.
Statistically, the Orange led in shots (30-10), free-position shots (6-4), draw controls (17-6), ground balls (28-23), and caused turnovers (14-10).
The Seahawks are next in on Saturday, February 27 when they travel to our nation's capital to meet American University. First draw between the Seahawks and Eagles is set for 11:00 a.m.
