Men's Tennis Earns First Victory Of Spring Season; Defeats Lafayette 6-1 On Saturday

Easton, PA – The Wagner men's tennis team earned its first win of the spring season, defeating the Lafayette Leopards, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 6-3 on the year while the Leopards fall to 1-2

"We had one of our best weeks of practice," said head coach Jason Sinkoff."  "Everyone performed well under, especially high pressure situations and capitalized on those opportunities and it's always a good feeling to get back into the win column."

"Today, we played a lot of close sets today and came out on top in almost all of them. In practice, we extensively worked on situational play, and the guys were able to implement that in today's match," coach Sinkoff added. "We have two tough opponents next weekend in Marist and Fordham. and we will need another great week of practice to be ready for the play."


The Green & White earned the first overall point when they took all three doubles matches. In No. 1 doubles play, the pairing of freshmen Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) and Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) improved to 5-1 as a team, defeating Brian Stefanowicz and Gavin Studner, 7-5.

Fellow freshman Lucas Lu (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Prep International School) and sophomore Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan) defeated Christ Matturri and Mason Keel, 7-5 for their first win as a team this season. 

In No. 3 doubles, the duo of sophomore Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and freshman Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) improved to 9-1 as a pair, winning 6-4 over Andrew Reed and Chris Kim.

In singles action, Sandy picked up win number seven, with a 6-3; 6-3 triumph over Stefanowicz. Poland also earned win number seven of the year, defeating Studner 6-4; 6-3. Knepplehout picked up his team-leading ninth victory of the season at No. 3 singles, edging Matturri, 6-3; 7-5. Boyd earned career victory No. 27 when he bested Keel, 6-0; 6-1 while Wang picked up his 16th career victory, 6-2; 7-6 (7-4) over Reed.

The Seahawks will have two matches on February 28 as they travel to White Plains, NY to tangle with Marist College at 4:30 p.m. before taking on Fordham University at 7:00 p.m.
