New Rochelle, NY – Junior midfielder Lauren Ednie (Verona, NJ/Verona) paced the Seahawks scored a hat trick, senior midfielder Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan) along with senior attackers Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) and Tori McGrath (Delmar, NY / Bethlehem Central) added two goals apiece but the Wagner women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener at Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) member, Iona College, 17-12, on Wednesday afternoon.
Today's contest marked the debut for Seahawk head coach
Katie Rowan, the former Syracuse All-American and assistant coach. The Green & White is next in action on Sunday, February 21 as the Seahawks travels to Syracuse for a 12:00 p.m. start at the Carrier Dome.
Erin Pugh scored six goals while teammate Mary Kate McCormick handed out eight assists in leading the Gaels victory. Thea Leitman recorded nine saves in goal while the Gaels received three goals from Christine Gironda. Kaelyn Noschese, Libby Miller, and Jenna Tolzman added two goals each.
The Seahawk seniors were instrumental in the offense on the afternoon as midfielder
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) and
Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) had a goal and an assist each.
Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ / Vernon Township) netted her first goal of the season.
Gegan led the Green & White in points with four (2G, 2A) while Tumolo (2G, 1A) finished with three points. Gegan led the team in draw controls with four while Fay and junior
Amanda Rey (Turnersville, NJ / Washington Township) added three draw controls apiece. In addition to being Wagner's leading goal-scorer, Ednie came up with a team-high three caused turnovers while Tumolo paced the Seahawks in the groundball department with three.

Lucy Darlington (Timonium, MD / Notre Dame Preparatory) made her first career start in net and recorded three saves in the first half before giving way to senior
Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD/ McDonogh) came on to register two saves while playing the entire second half.
After the Gaels had jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, the Seahawks scored three of the next four goals, two by Ednie, to tie the game at 3-3. With the score knotted at 4-4 midway through the opening half, Iona went on a 5-0 run, capped by a Tolzman score at the 6:17 mark of the half, in opening a 9-4 lead.
Tumolo then struck for a pair of goals within a span of 2:34, with the latter coming on an unassisted tally 1:18 before halftime, which made it a 9-6 game. Iona answered with a goal by Pugh, her fourth of the half, with just four seconds remaining to make it a 10-6 game at intermission.
Iona outscored Wagner 5-2 at the outset of the second half in building a 15-8 lead before the Seahawks went on a 4-1 run, capped by a Peterson man-up goal off of a Fay assist with 5:39 left to play, which brought the Seahawks within four goals, at 16-12. It would prove to be the visitors' final tally of the game, however, as Iona sank a late goal in fashioning the final score of 17-12.
Wagner outshot Iona 30-26 and led 16-14 in draw controls while the Gaels led in ground balls by a 15-13 count. The Seahawks were 1-of-9 on free position shots while the Gaels were 2-of-3 on FPOs.
