Wagner College comes up empty in 82-69 Northeast Conference road loss at LIU (Cormac Gordon, Staten Island Advance)

Brooklyn, NY –
Jerome Fink scored 26 points to lead three players in double figures as LIU Brooklyn posted an 82-69 Northeast Conference (NEC) victory over Wagner at the Steinberg Wellness Center tonight.

The Seahawks, who entered the game in a three-way tie for first place in the league standings, fall to 15-9 on the season, 8-5 in the NEC. In completing the regular season sweep over Wagner, the Blackbirds even their season mark at 12-12 while improving to 6-7 in the conference.

Junior guard Michael Carey (Nassau, Bahamas / Lamar Consolidated [San Jacinto College]) and redshirt senior forward Mike Aaman (Hazlet, NJ / Raritan [University of Rhode Island]) scored 12 points apiece to pace Wagner. Carey also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds in recording his 10th double-double of the season, which ranks third in the NEC. Sophomore guard JoJo Cooper (Wilmington, DE / Concord) was the third Seahawk to hit for double figures, finishing with a season-high 11 points off the bench.

Wagner had the tempo to its liking vs. the offensive-minded Blackbirds in the opening half, as LIU Brooklyn held a 32-28 halftime edge in a modestly-paced opening stanza.

A back-and-forth game early as the score was tied five times in the contest's opening 10 minutes. After Nura Zanna had muscled layup to put LIU Brooklyn on top, 19-16, Wagner countered with a 10-4 run, capped by a pair of crafty layups by Cooper that gave the visitors a 26-23 advantage with 2:43 remaining before the break.

The Blackbirds concluded the frame by outscoring the Green & White, 9-2, highlighted by a well-timed alley-oop dunk from Joel Hernandez off a no-look feed from Martin Hermannson, in seizing the 32-28 halftime lead. The Seahawks were held to just 37.1 percent from the field while connecting on just 1-of-7 from beyond-the-arc.

Wagner stayed within arm's length in the early part of the second half as a Carey layup off of an Aaman assist drew the Seahawks to within five at 41-36 with 14:53 left to play. LU Brooklyn then embarked on a pivotal 20-5 run over the next seven minutes with Frink accounting for nine of those points.

The 6-7, 230-pound junior transfer from Florida International, scored the final four points of the run on a dunk at the 7:52 mark, followed by a free throw with 7:25 left, with the latter providing the Blackbirds with their biggest lead of the game, of 20, at 61-41.

In addition to his 26-point outburst, Frink also grabbed 14 rebounds on the night in registering a double-double, while Hermannsson and Zanna added 17 and 16 points, respectively.

The Green & White are in action this Saturday, February 13 when they play their second of four straight road contests by traveling to Bryant for a 4:00 p.m. tip at the Chace Center.  It will be the second game of a doubleheader with the Bulldog and Seahawk women's teams kicking things off at 1:00 p.m.
