Women’s Basketball Falls To Penn 63-39

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's basketball team placed three players in double figures but it was not enough to offset the 17-point, 10-rebound effort from the University of Pennsylvania's 6-3 center Michelle Nwokedi as the Quakers posted a 63-39 victory over the Seahawks at the Spiro Sports Center this afternoon.

For the second straight game, the Green & White had only six players available, three of whom scored in double figures. Freshman guard Kellie Crouch (North Brunswick, NJ / St. John Vianney) led the way for Wagner with 11 points, while junior guard Tanasia Russell (Vineland, NJ / Vineland) and freshman forward Kerstie Phills (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Christian) added 10 points apiece.

Freshman forward Corinn Baggs (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Academy) paced the Seahawks in the rebounding department with six, in addition to tallying five points, while Phills added five boards.

After taking an early 8-7 lead on a Russell jumper with 3;57 left in the first quarter, the Seahawks went cold from the field, as the Quakers went on an 18-0 run in building a 25-8 lead en route to building a 39-13 advantage at halftime.

For the game, Penn held a 36.8%-33.3% edge in shooting while out-rebounding the Seahawks, 39-29. The Quakers, due in large part to the work by Nwokedi down low, held a 20-12 lead in points in the paint and a 22-12 margin in points off turnovers, as the Green & White turned the ball over 22 times.

Wagner did not attempt its first free throw until there was 1:15 remaining in the game when Crouch sank a pair. Phills then made two free throws with 46 seconds left as the Seahawks finished 4-of-4 from the charity stripe while Penn converted 11 of its 14 free throw attempts.

Crouch was the Seahawk team leader in assists with four while Russell came up with a team-high four steals.

With the win, Penn evened its record at 3-3 while the Green & White fell to 1-6.

The Seahawks, who outscored Penn, 16-15 in the fourth quarter, are right back at it in Monday, December 5 when they travel to West Point, NY to meet the Cadets of Army in a 7:00 p.m.
