Staten Island, NY – After trailing 2-0 at the half, the Wagner women's soccer team's spectacular second-half rally, which included goals by seniors
Taylor Sackaris (St. James, NY / Smithtown East) and
Amber Coca (Riverview, FL / Bloomingdale) fell just short, as the Seahawks dropped a 3-2 decision at foggy Hameline Field on Friday night.
Freshman
Autumn Clark (Fort Lauderdale, FL / Pine Crest Prep) and senior captain
Sydney McNutt (Hatboro, PA / Hatboro-Horsham) fired off the first two shots for the Seahawks, but were unable to put the ball into the net. Bryant took the lead on an own goal 13 minutes into the game and doubled its lead 20 minutes later on a shot by Abigail Smith.
The Green and White stormed out of the halftime locker room and moved the ball deep into Bulldog territory. Three minutes into the second half, freshman
Rorie St. Lawrence (Staten Island, NY / Leon Goldstein) broke through on the left wing and passed it to Sackaris, who finished from six yards out to cut the deficit in half. 60 minutes into the game, one of Coca's many dangerous free kicks in the game sailed just over the crossbar, while McNutt fell short with two promising attempts eight minutes later.
With 20 minutes remaining, freshman
Maria Nunez (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) received the ball twenty yards away from the net and let off a powerful shot, but Kaylan Conrad in goal for the Bulldogs made a fingertip save and deflected the ball out. On the ensuing corner kick, the Seahawks were rewarded for their efforts, as senior
Jessica Mouradian (Baldwin, NY / Baldwin) fed fellow senior Coca, who tied the game with a strong header from close range. The Bulldogs scored with four minutes remaining, as Quinn Massaroni gave Bryant the win.
McNutt led Wagner with five shots, including three attempts on goal, while Nunez and Coca also had two attempts in the game. As a team, the Seahawks outshot the Bulldogs 14-8, including a 12-5 difference in the second half.
Wagner will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, October 23, as they host Mount St. Mary's at 2:00 pm at Hameline Field.
