Stony Brook, NY – Junior midfielder Sydney McNutt (Hatboro, PA / Hatboro-Horsham) netted her first goal of the season tonight at Stony Brook but the Seawolves were able to punch home a late goal in recording a 2-1 win over Wagner at LaValle Stadium.

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-5, while the Seawolves picked up their first win of the year in improving to 1-4.

"We played well and competed the best we have this season," said head coach Mike Minielli. "A couple mistakes cost us on defense and we were better on attack but still need better execution to find better chances."

Wagner created a few offensive opportunities in the first half, out-shooting Stony Brook 7-6, but neither team was able to find the back of the net in the opening stanza.

This all changed when the horn blew for the second half as Stony Brook gained momentum and a 1-0 lead when Raven Edwards fed a cross pass to Lindsay Hutchinson, who poked the ball past the outstretched arms of Seahawk sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlin Flaherty (Southfield, MI / Wylie Groves) and into the top right of the goal.

Wagner responded less than eight minutes later, mounting an offensive possession that featured a couple of impressive touches from junior midfielder Taylor Sackaris (St. James, NY / Smithtown East) to senior midfielder Megan Fritz (Cape Coral, FL / Mariner), who delivered a deft pass to McNutt in notching her first assist of the season. After receiving the pass from Fritz, McNutt, from the top of the box, dropped the ball in, deflecting it off the right post where it snuck past Stony Brook keeper, Cara Gallagher, in the 55th minute, knotting the score at 1-1.

With just 5:09 remaining in the second half, Stony Brook's Tessa Devereaux took a shot at the top of the box that went over Flaherty's extended arms to the top right corner, for her first goal of the season, in what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Flaherty recorded four saves while going the distance between the pipes. Stony Brook held a slim 15-12 edge in shots over Wagner which saw 19 players see action.

The Seahawks resume play next Friday, September 11, when they travel to Delaware State for a match under the lights at 7:00 p.m.
