Game Notes

Houston, TX -
The 85th season of Wagner College football will commence at Rice University today at 3:30 EST., in a contest that will be produced by the American Sports Network and seen live on 117 television stations across the nation, including SportsNet NY (SNY) in the New York City metropolitan area.

Led by first-year head coach Jason Houghtaling, the Seahawks will be facing a tall task in playing their fourth-ever game against a Football Bowl Championship Subdivision (FBS) opponent. Members of Conference-USA, the Owls are coming off a 2014 season where they went 8-5 and defeated Fresno State 30-6 in the Hawaii Bowl.

When the Seahawks hit the field on Saturday, where forecast calls for temperature in the mid-90's and 60 % humidity, it will mark the first time since 1980 when someone other than Walt Hameline will be directing the Seahawks. The nation's third-youngest head coach at age 34, Houghtaling took over last November after Hameline stepped down as head coach after 34 years and 223 victories, while remaining as athletic director.

"The word excitement sums up our attitude," said Houghtaling of the lid-lifter that will take place at Rice Stadium, a 47-000 seat venue located on the Rice campus in Houston, TX. "We're ready to go. We're excited. The kids are jacked up to go out there and play this game. Having the game on national TV certainly adds to the excitement level," Houghtaling added. "We play these games because it enhances our student-athletes' experience. If you talk to our kids, they love playing against top-level competition at top-level facilities. They get a chance to jump on a charter plane and it's just, all in all, a great experience for everyone involved in the program from alumni to the Touchdown Club members who make the trip with us. It's just a great thing for Wagner College and Wagner College football."

Wagner has faced one FBS opponent in each of the past three seasons, dropping a 7-3 contest at Florida Atlantic in 2012, a 54-0 decision at Syracuse in 2013 and 34-3 loss at Florida International in 2014. For the first time in 2015, the Seahawks will face two FBS foes as Wagner travels to BYU on October 24, in addition to the six-game NEC portion of the season.
