Results West Windsor, NJ – The #5 seeded Wagner men's tennis team shutout the #4 seed Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, 4-0, in the opening round of the 2015 Northeast Conference Championships held at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 14-9 on the season and will appear in its first semifinals since the 2002 Tournament as they will take on the overall top seed, Bryant University, on Saturday, April 18 at 11:30 am. The Mountaineers finish the season with an overall record of 9-7.
"I'm really proud of our guys," said head coach
Danny Kreyman. "They were composed today and played solid tennis."
The Seahawks took control of the match early as Wagner grabbed the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions as freshmen
Michal Rolski (Kielczow, Poland/Oak Meadow [VT]) and
Juan Alanis (Mexico City, Mexico/K12 International Academy) defeated the pairing of Mateo DeSomocurcio and Adam Salam, 8-3. Fellow classmates
Ryan Khan (Weston, FL/University School) and
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) secured the doubles point as they edged Austin Blake and Brandon Wortkotter, 8-4.
Rolski won 6-3, 6-2 for his 18
th victory of the season and the 11th at the #1 flight position as he defeated Blake. Alanis was victorious at #3 flight as he defeated Salam, 6-4; 6-4.
Fellow freshman
Jakob Mostyn Kolb (Melbourne, FL/Melbourne) sealed the Seahawks' victory with a 6-4; 6-2 decision at #6 flight against Peter Salomon.
"Bryant will be another exciting match," added Kreyman after the win. "They will be fired up to play us again but we are excited and ready to take that next step as we look for our first NEC championship."
