Score SheetDavis, CA – The Wagner women's water polo team began their
California series in style with a 6-4 victory over #14 Pacific in the opening game of the Aggie Invitational hosted by UC Davis.
The #17(T) Seahawks improve their record to 7-2 on the season with their third win over a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top-20 opponent, having already defeated Long Beach State and Hartwick.
Seahawk head coach Chris Radmomovich and assistant coach
Allison Kosich each had ties with today's adversary as
Radmonovich served on the sidelines of the University of Pacific's coaching staff from 2004-2007 and Kosich was a member of the Tigers squad from 2010-2011 before transferring to Hartwick.
The pace of play was unhurried early as neither team scored within the first four minutes of the contest. Pacific notched the first goal of the game off a strike from junior Gracie Smith. The Seahawks responded emphatically by completely flipping momentum to their side with two unanswered goals. The first goal was tossed in by center
Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD/ Broadneck) with the second coming from senior
Michelle Greenough (Davis, CA/ Davis) with only 10 seconds remaining in the period.
The buzzer didn't affect the Seahawk momentum as the Green & White delivered on the two lone goals of the second period. Freshman
Kimberly Watson (Pointe-Claire, Qubec/ John Rennie) buried a goal on the man-up situation for the squad after some beautiful ball movement. Doerfler netted her second of the contest with 2:50 remaining in the half. Sophomore goalie
Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta/ Dr. E.P. Scarlett) and the defensive efforts held strong through halftime as the score read 4-1 in favor of the Seahawks.
California native
Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley) notched a man-up goal with 4:21 left in the third stanza. The Green & White kept firing at Pacific goalie Michele Realton, however she was up to the task has she had seven saves in the third quarter alone. It appeared the Seahawks would be taking their 5-1 advantage into the fourth period however Gracie Smith found the back of the net again for the Tigers, halting the Seahawks 5 goal run and cutting the deficit to three with 44 seconds left.
Watson ripped in a goal just 48 seconds into the fourth quarter for her second of the game, building the lead back up to four. Riddle and the defense stopped the barrage from Pacific allowing only two late goals and sealing the 6-4 upset bid for the Green & White.
The Seahawks are set to square-off with #10 UC Davis later today at approximately 9:00 PM eastern time.
