COACH HOUGHTALING DISCUSSES THE CLASS
Staten Island, NY - Seventeen student-athletes have signed national letters of intent and will continue their education, while pursuing a football career, at Wagner College for head coach
Jason Houghtaling.
Â
The fax machine was whirring all day in the offices at the Spiro Sports Center as the future Seahawks pledged their commitment to Wagner, and a Seahawk football program that last fall claimed its second Northeast Conference (NEC) title in the last three years. Wagner went 7-4 overall in 2014, its last under head coach
Walt Hameline, who announced in December that he was stepping down as head coach after 34 years but will remain as athletic director.
Â
The 6-1 league mark gave the Green & White, who won the 2012 NEC championship and ensuing NCAA Division I FCS Playoff first-round game over Colgate, a share of the 2014 NEC crown, though Sacred Heart  represented the conference in the NCAA Playoffs by virtue of its victory over the Seahawks.
Of the 17-person class, Â four are mid-year enrollees who transferred in from other academic institutions and are already Wagner students, 12 are high school seniors who will be freshmen in the fall, while one is a transfer student who will enroll as a sophomore in the fall.
Â
"We're very excited to have attracted a group of high-quality student-athletes who we look forward to blending with our returning core," said Houghtaling. "This class includes a number of quality players who will address specific needs that we have and who I believe bring a strong academic foundation that will allow them to to succeed in the classroom here at Wagner.
Â
Broken down by geography, this class includes nine student-athletes who hail from New Jersey, five from New York and one each from California, Florida and Texas. Of the 17 student-athletes announced today, six are listed as offensive linemen and four are defensive backs, while three come in as linebackers, along with one defensive line, quarterback, one wide receiver and one tight end. It should be noted that two offensive linemen are listed as defensive linemen as well while several of the defensive line and linebacker prospects were also top ball carriers in high school.
Â
Additional student-athletes are expected to be announced at later dates as they become cleared for release through the athletic department's compliance office.
