Staten Island, NY -The Wagner women's soccer team snapped it's four game losing streak by picking up a 2-1 victory over Northeast Conference (NEC) member, LIU Brooklyn, Friday night under the lights on Hameline field.
With the win, the Seahawks earned their first conference victory (1-1) and improve to 2-9-1 on the season while the Blackbirds fall to 3-10-0 overall and 0-3 in the NEC.
"I am very happy with the win and the way we played tonight," said head coach
Mike Minielli. "LIU Brooklyn is a tough team to defend and I thought we did well to contain their passing and movement. We were much more aggressive in our attack tonight and it paid off with two goals."
It was a late start to Friday night's game when severe thunderstorms rolled through, delaying the game about one hour and 15 minutes.
Despite the wet conditions, the two teams played competitive soccer and controlled the opening half equally, not allowing either team to score.
Just seven minutes into the second half, the Seahawks found themselves up 1-0. Junior midfielder
Amber Coca (Riverview, FL/Blomingdale) lofted a corner kick into the LIU Brooklyn box and junior
Megan Fritz (Cape Coral, FL/Mariner) came up with the header to beat LIU Brooklyn's goalkeeper Jessica Montrose, netting her fifth marker of the season.
About ten minutes later, in the 62nd minute, senior midfielder
Johanna Konrad (Volkach, Germany/LSH) wound up alone on the right side of field. She dribbled the ball up and just inside the 28 yard line, ripped a shot that went right over Montrose's extended arms and into the top left corner of the net. Konrad's goal would be her first marker of the season and turned out to be the game winning goal of the evening.
The Blackbirds didn't ease up however as freshman Marian Awad responded just ten seconds later in hopes to mount a comeback making it a tight 2-1 game.
Strong and smart play by the Wagner defensive line of freshman
Peyton Beck (St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves),
Jessica Donnelly (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan),
Jessica Mouradian (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin),
Tori Rodriguez (Mission Viejo, CA/Capistrano Valley) and Seahawk freshman goalkeeper
Katie Viscardi (Hazlet, NJ/Mater Dei Prep) shut down the Blackbird's momentum to secure the 2-1 victory.
Viscardi picked up her first collegiate win and finished the game with four tough saves. Montrose managed five stops for the Blackbirds.
The Seahawks created multiple opportunities during the match and ended the game with 14 total shots from nine different players, six more than LIU Brooklyn.
Women's soccer returns to the turf at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16, as the team hosts conference-foe Robert Morris in its makeup game on Hameline Field.
