(Photo Above by Dr. Ira Gershansky)Loretto, PA - The Wagner College football team makes the long trek to Loretto, PA to meet the Red Flash of Saint Francis U on Saturday, October 17 at 3:30 p.m. in a contest that will be carried live as the second half of a "#NECFB on ESPN3" doubleheader following the Duquesne at Bryant matchup at Noon.
This is the second of three Wagner games that will appear on ESPN3 this season. On September 26, the Seahawks fell to Lafayette, 35-23 in a game that was carried on ESPN 3 while the Bryant at Wagner contest on November 7 at Noon will also appear on ESPN 3.
The Seahawks are off to a 0-5 start following last Saturday night's 26-3 loss at Columbia. Wagner is 0-1 in NEC play as the Green & White dropped a 9-6 home decision to Robert Morris on October 10. Saint Francis, the lone NEC team that has yet to contest a conference game, enters this weekend with a 3-2 record, its first winning record in non-conference play since 1992.
Wagner-Saint Francis U: The SeriesThis will be the 25th meeting on the grid iron between the schools. While the Seahawks own a 21-3 edge in the all-time series and have won the last seven meetings, the recent history between the teams has been high on the competitive, scoring and entertainment scale. Last season, the Seahawks survived a 46-39 double-overtime thriller on Staten Island. This was the second, wild shoot-out these teams have played in the last five meetings. In 2009, Wagner earned a 56-48 win in triple-overtime. In Wagner's current seven-game winning streak over the Red Flash, the average final score has been 31-25. While the two matchups that went into multiple overtimes were decided by seven and eight points, respectively, three of the other five meetings during the Wagner win streak have been by margins of four points or fewer.
The CoachesJason Houghtaling (say it Ho-tal-ling) is in his first season as the head coach of the Seahawks, taking over for 34-year head coach
Walt Hameline, who announced last November that he would be stepping down while remaining as Seahawk athletic director. Houghtaling was the Seahawks' associate head coach and offensive coordinator last season and has spent seven years as a Wagner assistant. In his last three years as offensive coordinator, the Seahawks amassed a 16-6 NEC record with league titles in two of the last three seasons. In 2014, the Seahawks' offense ranked No. 4 nationally in time of possession and did not commit a turnover in the last three games of the season.
Former National Football League All-Pro Offensive Lineman Chris Villarrial is in his fifth season as the head coach at SFU and sports a record of 20-39a . He was named the 25th head coach of the Saint Francis University football program on December 20, 2009. After serving one year as the offensive coordinator under predecessor Dave Opfar, Villarrial will enter his sixth season at the helm of the Saint Francis football program in 2015. The football program continued its renaissance in 2014, again matching its highest win total in the FCS era with five victories. That marks the third consecutive season with five wins for the Red Flash and the Flash's third straight season with a .500-record in NEC play. That's a first for the program since joining the NEC in 1996.
