Wagner Opens Season With Convincing 7-0 Win Over Holy Cross

Wagner won all three doubles and six singles matches in convincing fashion en route to posting an easy 7-0 victory over Holy Cross in the season opener for both teams at the Sinnott Family Tennis Facility.

The Seahawks' season-opening win was its first since defeating St. Francis Brooklyn 4-3 on September 14, 2005 while their' 7-0 victory was their first shutout since blanking Monmouth on September 21, 2004.

In doubles action, the duo of junior Sawyer Fonda (Kelowna, British Columbia / Okanagan Mission Secondary) and freshman Jeremy Nuss (Portland, OR / Lincoln) got things rolling with a quick 6-1 win before sophomore Sam Flaxman (Avon, CT / Avon) and freshman Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA / Loyola College Prep) secured the first Seahawk point with an easy 6-2 win. The freshmen tandem of Rick Delboi (Rosbach V.D.H., Germany / Anna-Schmidt-Schule) and Allen Wang (Clovis, CA / Buchanan) capped the Green & White doubles domination with a hard-fought 7-5 victory.

Wagner continued its outstanding play in singles action, claiming all six matches in straight sets, starting with Wang at No. 1. The California native posted a 6-1, 6-1 win before Nuss rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5. Fonda then clinched the matched with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6.

At No. 2 singles, Boyd also was victorious by a 6-2, 6-2 count before Delboi picked up a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3. Flaxman capped the stellar Seahawk performance with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory at No. 4.

The Green & White returns to action on Sunday, September 14 at Siena for a 2:00 pm match.
