Head Coaches In Two Previous MeetingsWhen Wagner and Lafayette met two times in the mid-1970's, Lafayette was coached in both games by Neil Putman, who in 10 seasons, from 1971-1980, posted a record of 44-55-3 (.446).
In the first meeting between the schools, in 1976, Wagner's head coach was Bob Hicks, who was in his 15th season of a 16-year Seahawk career that spanned from 1962-1977. The 1976 Seahawks went 2-7-1 while Lafayette went 5-5 that year.
Hicks was one of the most successful coaches in Wagner history, posting a 77-64 (.544) record, guiding the Seahawks to undefeated campaigns in 1964 (10-0) and 1967 (9-0), and was inducted to the Wagner Hall of Fame in 1992. His 1967 club captured the Lambert Trophy as the top team in the East. At the upcoming October 11 home game vs. Saint Francis U, Wagner will recognize and honor the 1964 team on the 50th anniversary of its special season. Regarded as excellent developer of talent, Hicks coached former NFL Player and Eagles and Jets Head Coach Rich Kotite. A number of Hick's players were also selected All-American as well as All-East and his 77 victories are the second-most behind only current head coach
Walt Hameline.
In the November 30, 1979 matchup, Wagner wss guided by Bill Russo, who was in the second year of this three-year tenure on Grymes Hill. The season-ending loss at Lafayette left the Seahawks with a 5-5 record while the victory gave the Leopards an identical final mark of 5-5.
Bill Russo's Wagner-Lafayette ConnectionThe name Bill Russo will ring familiar to long-time followers of Lafayette football. Prior to taking over as head coach of the Leopards in 1981, Russo spent three seasons (1978-1980) as head coach at Wagner., compiling a 15-15 (.500 record). After going 2-8 in Russo's first season of 1978, the Green & White improved to 5-5 in 1979. His top season was his third and final one at Wagner, when he guided the Seahawks to an 8-2 record. Russo's departure paved the way for his offensive line coach,
Walt Hameline, to take over as head coach in 1981. Some 34 seasons later, Hameline remains at Wagner, as both athletic director and head coach. One of six active FC coaches with 200 or more wins, Hameline enter's Saturday's tilt vs. Lafayatte with a career record of 217-137-2.

(Through game of 9/20/14)Walt Hameline on the Matchup vs. Lafayette"We're going to have to be able to run the ball a little bit, control the clock on the offensive side of the ball and if we do get into the red zone we have to put some points up. Defensively, we have to stop the run against Lafayette without question. And the special teams side of it, I think they do a good job on special teams and I think that'll be a battle that we'll have to win if we're going to win this particular football game."Seahawk Plusses and Minuses - TeamWagner enters the Lafayette game ranked Ranked No. 1 in the NEC in three categories:

About the LeopardsLast time out, on September 20, No. 13 William and Mary scored 24 unanswered points to rally for a 33-19 win over Lafayette. Tribe QB Steve Cluley was the difference maker in the second half. After being held to minus-10 rushing yards in the first half, Cluley carved his way through the Lafayette defense after intermission, finishing with 87 rushing yards and two running scores. Cluley also completed a four-yard TD pass to start the decisive third quarter. The Leopards' kicking game left points on the board in the first half, missing one PAT and having another blocked and returned for a defensive two-point conversion while also missing a 29-yard field goal early in the second quarter. With 160 rushing yards at William and Mary, senior RB Ross Scheuerman moved into fifth place for career rushing yards. Scheuerman has 2,709 career yards and recently passed Ryan Priest '87 (2,597 yards). Scheuerman needs 228 yards to eclipse Tom Costello '91 (2,936) and could advance as high as third all-time with a healthy senior season. Scheuerman has led the team in rushing the past three seasons and carried for 1,113 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2013 as the first player since 2006 to rush for 1,000 yards.
