Flushing, NY - Wagner defeated St. Francis Brooklyn 4-3 in Northeast Conference (NEC) tennis action while picking up its first league victory in just under six years.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 2-12 and 1-3 in the NEC while the Terriers fall to 2-15 and 1-4 in the league.
In doubles action, St. Francis Brooklyn opened the match with a quick 8-1 win at No. 2 before sophomore
Sawyer Fonda (Kelowna, British Columbia / Okanagan Mission Secondary) and
Devon Flint (Pine Bush, NY / Pine Bush) followed with an equally efficient 8-0 victory at No. 3. Sophomore
Christian Grau (Dallas, TX / Spring Creek Academy) and freshman
Sam Flaxman (Avon, CT / Avon) then clinched the first point of the match with a hard-fought 8-6 win at first doubles.
Fonda then extended the Green & White advantage out to 2-0 with a straight set 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles. The Terriers then rallied to take a 3-2 lead with wins at No. 4, No. 2 and No. 1.
Sophomore
Christopher Jarema (Pitts Grove, NJ / Schalick) then tied up the score at 3-3 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 5 before Flint clinched the match with a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6.
Wagner will conclude the regular season at Rider on Tuesday, April 15 with first serve slated for 2:00 pm.
