Wagner Remains Undefeated with 1-1 Draw

Box Score / Highlights

Staten Island, NY – Behind senior Jackie Nicholas'  (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) third goal of the season, the Wagner women's soccer team tied the University of Maine 1-1 in a nail-biting overtime draw. Wagner remains undefeated on the season with a record of 4-0-1, while Maine is now 3-1-1.

Though both teams fought hard through the first half, the score remained even at 0-0. However, 17 minutes into the second half, the Black Bears got on the board first in the 62nd minute with a goal from Camille Varin-Tremblay, who was able to knock in a shot in the upper corner of the net to make it a 0-0 game.

Not willing to concede the match, Wagner came back to tie the game at 1-1 in the 70th minute, when Nicholas scored an unassisted ball in front of the net off a rebounded corner kick.
Evenly matched throughout the rest of the second half, neither the Seahawks nor the Black Bears would get a clear shot on net for the remainder of regulation, forcing the 1-1 game into overtime.
The battle continued into two overtime periods, but neither team was able to seal a win.

Overall, Wagner held the slight statistical advantage, outshooting Maine 18-11. During the match, 19 Seahawks saw action.

"This was the first time we were ever down this season, and we came back from that, so it's really impressive," stated junior goalkeeper Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy). "We played hard. The fact that we held it together the whole game was great on our part. Maine played really well, and it was evenly matched the whole time."

The Seahawks return to action this Thursday, September 12th, when they travel to Stony Brook. The match is set for a 7:00 p.m. kick off.
