Staten Island, NY - Christian Rautenstrauch (Charlotte, NC / Providence Day) won twice in his final match as a member of the Green & White while leading the Seahawks to a dominating 6-1 win over Rider on Senior Day at the Wagner Tennis Courts.
With the win, Wagner concludes its fall campaign with a 1-3 record while Rider falls to 1-10.
Rautenstrauch, who will graduate in December, was honored prior to the match for his service to the Seahawk tennis program and clinched the match for the Green & White with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win at No. 2 singles.
"The players really stepped up as a team and it was great to send Christian out with a win," said head coach
Danny Kreyman. "He's been a tremendous leader for us this year and we're happy he was the guy who clinched the match."
Wagner opened the match by securing the doubles point by virtue of wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The tandem of Rautenstrauch and sophomore
Sawyer Fonda (Kelowna, British Columbia / Okanagan Mission Secondary) secured the first Seahawk victory of the afternoon by an 8-2 count at second doubles. After the Broncs evened the match, sophomore
Christian Grau (Dallas, TX / Spring Creek Academy) and freshman
Sam Flaxman (Avon, CT / Avon) clinched the first point with a hard-fought 8-6 win in first flight doubles.
Fonda opened singles play with an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3, before Flaxman extended the Seahawk advantage out to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 while setting the stage for Rautenstrauch's aforementioned victory.
Grau then pulled off a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 1, before freshman
Devon Flint (Pine Bush, NY / Pine Bush) rounded out the Green & White scoring with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5.
Wagner will begin its spring season at Saint Peter's on Saturday, March 8.
