Wagner Edged By Marist, 2-1

Box Score

Poughkeepsie, NY –
The Wagner College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Marist on Tuesday night at Tenney Stadium. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Red Foxes improve to 1-0 with the win.

Sophomore Sydney McCarthy (Canton, GA) tallied her first career goal in defeat, pulling the Green & White closer in a second-half comeback attempt. Fellow sophomore Lisa Capelli (Manalapan, NJ) recorded a career-high 12 saves in goal.

Marist struck first in the 38th minute with a tally off the foot of Amanda Epstein. The goal came off a corner kick, launched into the box by Chelsea Botta, headed by Samantha Panzner, and then fired into the bottom right corner of the goal to put the home team ahead, 1-0.

The Red Foxes had eight shots on goal in the first half, seven of which were turned away by Capelli.

Botta added to the Marist lead in the 60th minute, when she redirected a deflection from Rycke Guiney past Capelli to extend the score to 2-0.

Wagner cut the deficit in half in the 82nd minute when McCarthy put the Seahawks on the board with her first collegiate goal. Caitlin Landsman, who replaced Wicks in goal for the Red Foxes at the half, was drawn out of the box to chase down a ball, and McCarthy capitalized by putting the ball across the box and into the far side of the net for the final 2-1 margin.

Wagner returns to action on Friday, Aug. 24 at 4:00 pm, when the Seahawks host Stony Brook in the Green & White's 2012 home opener.
