San Diego, CA - The Wagner water polo team upset No. 14 Hawaii 7-6 in the opening match of the Aztec Tournament at San Diego State University this morning. In the come-from-behind victory, the Seahawks trailed 3-2 after the opening stanza and overcame the Rainbow Wahine with a strong three-goal fourth quarter. With the win, Wagner improves to an overall record of 8-13.
Following two goals from senior
Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) in the first period, Wagner remained within one throughout the second quarter as each team managed to find the net once.
With the score set 4-3 in favor of Hawaii at the half, the Green & White held the Rainbow Wahine to one goal in the third quarter as senior
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA / Wilson) managed to keep the Seahawks within one with a goal of her own.
Hawaii led 5-4 entering the final eight minutes of play until Beck tied the score at 5-5 with her second goal of the game. Following an exclusion drawn by Robinson,
Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) sent one past the Hawaii defense as Wagner took the lead. Answering swiftly, Hawaii counter-attacked the Wagner defense and hit the back of the net tying the score again at 6-6.
With 1:40 remaining in play, Hannings found senior
Lauren French (Colmar, PA / North Penn) open in front of the net as French sent home what would be the game-winning shot.
With 53 seconds on the clock, Hawaii called a timeout in an attempt to devise a play to force the game into overtime. Out of the huddle, the Seahawks stole the ball away from the nationally ranked team and maintained possession to secure the 7-6 victory.
Wagner resumes play at 6:30 PM (EST) when they match up against No. 12 Cal State Northridge.
