College Park, MD – The Wagner water polo team dropped to an 0-2 record following a 13-7 loss to the No. 8 Aztecs of San Diego St. on Saturday at the Terrapin Invitational held at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium on the campus of the University of Maryland.
San Diego State came out strong as Meaghan Poland found the back of the net only 18 seconds into the game. After the early Aztec goal, the Wagner defense held tough, keeping the No. 8 ranked team to a one-goal lead for half of the first quarter.
With 3:42 remaining in the first, Poland knocked in another scoring shot followed by a goal from Amber Pezzolla a minute later. The duo put the Aztecs on a 3-0 scoring run over the next 2:00.
Following a San Diego St. exclusion which put the Seahawks in a man-up situation, senior
Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) put Wagner on the scoreboard as the period ended with the score set at 3-1.
The second period brought another early Poland goal followed by two more Aztec scoring plays. With 2:55 left in the first half, a goal from sophomore
Sidney Hoshko (Coronado, CA / Coronado) cut the deficit to four as the Aztecs entered the half with a 6-2 lead.
After the break, San Diego St. opened the third quarter, scoring four goals in four minutes. On another man-up opportunity for Wagner, junior
Leslie Poole (Downey, CA / Warren) put one past the defense with 2:33 of play remaining. With five seconds on the clock, freshman
Jessica Burdge (Stockton, CA / St. Mary's) registered her first collegiate goal to end the half with the score set at 10-4.
The final stanza opened with a second Burdge goal, cutting the Aztec lead to five. The Aztecs quickly answered back with a pair of goals from Pezzolla and Poland, her fourth of the game.
With two minutes remaining in the game, senior
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA / Wilson) hit back-to-back goals to make it a 12-7 game. The Aztecs came back with a last second shot to fashion the final score at 13-7.

Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy) recorded five saves in the loss.
The Seahawks are back in action tomorrow at 3:00 pm when they take on the hosting Terps of Maryland. The last time these two faced off, Wagner picked up the second program victory against the Terps in a nail-biting 9-8 win.
