Football Travels To Ivy League Foe Cornell For Saturday 12:30 PM Tilt

GAME NOTES


The Seahawks travel to Ithaca, NY to meet Ivy League member Cornell on Saturday in the first of two consecutive non-conference games as Wagner hosts Georgetown on Saturday, October 8 at 1:00 pm.

SCENE-SETTER
Wagner enters the Cornell contest with a 1-3 record, having dropped three straight games. The last two losses, both against Northeast Conference (NEC) foes, have come by a combined six points as the Seahawks dropped a 28-24 home decision to Central Connecticut St. on September 17, before being narrowly edged at Bryant, 30-28, on September 24. Cornell enters the game with a mark of 1-1, opening the season with a 24-13 home win over Bucknell on September 17 before dropping a 37-17 decision at Yale on September 24.   

THE SERIES WITH CORNELL
Wagner and Cornell meet for the second consecutive season and for just the third time ever In fact, Cornell is the only Ivy League team that Wagner has ever faced. Last season, these teams met on September 18, 2010 and the Seahawks came away with a 41-7 victory in their home opener. Quarterback Nick Doscher hit a number of big plays, going 8-of-11 for 227 yards through the air with three touchdowns while also picking up 77 more yards and one touchdown on the ground over just three quarters of action.  Cornell won the the first-ever meeting between the schools in Ithaca on October 30, 1999 with the Big Red coming away with a 31-14 victory. Wagner's all-time leading rusher Rick Sarille was held to just 49 yards on 16 carries as the offense was paced by receivers Chuck Kinsley and Mike Cerminaro. Kinsely hauled in a pair of passes for 73 yards and a score while Cerminaro, who also played on the Wagner baseball team and in the Chicago Cubs' organization, snared a team-best four catches for 56 yards and a touchdown.

LAST YEAR'S MEETING
In addition to QB Nick Doscher's 227 yards passing, Wagner rushed for 325 yards on 51 attempts (6.4 yards per carry), highlighted by the ply of Torian Phillips, who had 114 of his game-high 133 yards in the second half in his first collegiate start at running back. Phillips, a transfer from Syracuse, is currently a starting cornerback for the Seahawks. Running back Jeremy Martinez also eclipsed the century mark with 117 yards on the ground. In the pivotal half, Wagner outgained Cornell by a whopping 266-46 margin, averaging 7.4 yard per play, in building a 20-0 halftime lead. On Wagner's first drive of the second half and facing a third-and-11 from the Wagner 12-yard line, Doscher found wide receiver Justin Matthews for an 88-yard touchdown reception, extending the lead out to 27-0 with 11:40 to play in the third quarter. On defense, linebacker Julian Stanford was a menace all day, recording 2.5 sacks on defense, one forced fumble and two quarterback hurries while fellow linebacker Keith Davis had a team-best eight tackles

WILLIAMS 13TH IN NATION IN RUSHING
Sophomore running back Dominique Williams enters the  Cornell game ranked 13th in the nation among all FCS rushers, checking in at 116.8 yards per game with 467 yards on 91 rushes (5.1 yards per carry). Williams cracked the century mark for the seventh time in his 12-game Seahawk career. Williams surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for his career vs. Central Connecticut St. and enters the Cornell game with 1,109 yards rushing. Williams also has six touchdowns on the season for 36 points, which ranks third in the NEC
