Box Score
Staten Island, NY – Junior forward Julie Vigliotti's (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) late goal gave the Wagner College women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Marist in the Green & White's home opener at Wagner College Stadium.
The Seahawks earned the first scoring chance of the game after an offensive possession translated into a Alissa Bianculli (Islip, NY / Saint Anthony's) corner kick just three minutes into the game. Wagner's set short-corner play was broken up by the Marist defense though, eliminating any threat.
The Red Foxes put together a string of opportunities midway through the first half, earning three straight corner kicks. On Rycke Guiney's second cross, Wagner goalkeeper Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy) made an acrobatic punch to clear a dangerous ball from the box. The Seahawk defense locked it down in the final minutes of the opening frame, keeping the contest scoreless heading into the halftime break.
The Seahawks opened the second half much like they did the first, applying heavy pressure on the Red Foxes' back four. Sophomore Jackie Nicholas (Rockville Centre, NY / South Side) looked to be on a clear breakaway, but jumped her run a step too early, being whistled for offsides.
Just minutes later, the second-year forward had another quality scoring chance, jarring the ball loose from Marist goalie Courey Schaetzle just inside the 18-yard box. A diving grab by the sophomore netminder prevented Nicholas from burying her first goal of the year, and kept the game scoreless.
The Red Foxes' best chances of the game came in the 72nd minute when a 30-yard indirect kick found its way on goal, forcing Marcy to make a sliding save to clear the ball from the box. Marist earned back-to-back corner kicks immediately following the set piece, but the Wagner defense was up to the task.
The scoreless tie was snapped in the 85th minute when junior Katie Keown (Morris Plains, NJ / Morristown) launched a deep throw into the heart of the penalty area. In the right place, Vigliotti blasted a shot past Schaetzle and into the upper right corner of the goal, giving the Seahawks the 1-0 win.
Marist outshot the Seahawks 13-6, but Marcy's six saves gave the sophomore her second consecutive shutout, and Wagner its first 2-0 start in program history.
The Seahawks will look to make it three in-a row on Tuesday, August 30, when they play host to NJIT at 4:00 p.m.
