Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY) recorded two goals and an assist on the day to lead the Wagner College women's soccer team past Holy Cross 4-1 at Wagner Stadium.
The Seahawks wasted no time testing the Holy Cross backline, as a pass from
Catherine Del Medico (Park Ridge, IL) split the Crusader defense and came right to the feet of Vigliotti. The striker took one touch of the ball before lacing a shot nearside and into the back of the net. Vigliotti's goal came 53 seconds into the first half, making it the fastest Seahawk goal in program history.
The second-year striker got on the board again in the 20th minute after
Monica Zurich (Montvale, NJ) gathered up a loose ball in the box and played a through ball to Vigliotti, who was able to break free from her defender and place a shot past Crusader goalie Mary Ferketic, giving the Seahawks an early 2-0 lead.
The Holy Cross offense found the goal frame once in the opening half, with midfielder Sarah Kelly's shot being safely grabbed by Seahawk keeper
Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY).
Holy Cross had new life early in the second half after Shelby Stand notched her second goal of the year on a long pass from Maura Fox. Stands shot beat a diving Marcy to the right side, making it a one goal game.
Just minutes after Stand's goal, the Seahawks struck back. Wagner was awarded a penalty kick in the 69th minute after
Amanda Sieferman (Tuscon, AZ) was taken down in the box. Junior
Terryn Marette (Chevy Chase, MD), who was called upon to take the penalty kick, stepped over the ball and struck a shot into the side netting to give the Seahawks a 3-1 lead.
Vigliotti's offensive prowess led to the games final goal, as she slide a pass behind the Crusaders defense to an on-running
Jackie Nicholas (Rockville Centre, NY). The freshman took care of the rest, ripping a shot past Ferketic to seal the victory for the Green and White.
With the win, Wagner moves to 3-2 on the year, while Holy Cross drops its third straight game to fall to 1-3.
The Seahawks will next travel to NJIT on September 10, to take on the Highlanders at 7:00 pm.
