The Leopards came out strong in the opening half, outshooting the visiting Seahawks 4-2, but Wagner goalie
Katie Marcy (Fr., Bellmore, NY) and the rest of the Seahawk backline kept the game scoreless through the first 45 minutes.
In the third minute of the second half though, Lafayette got on the board. Janelle Pierson slotted a ball through to Olivia Hawes who placed a shot past Marcy, giving Lafayette a 1-0 lead in their season opener.
Wagner battled back in the remaining minutes of regulation, earning three corner kicks which developed into quality scoring chances for the Green and White. The Leopards goalkeeper Lauren Smedley was up to the task though, making key saves.
In the 89th minute of regulation, the Seahawks earned a penalty kick after a foul was committed by a Leopard player in the box. Sophomore
Katie Keown (Morris Plains, NJ) stepped up over the ball and rifled a shot past a diving Smedley to even the score and one apiece and send the game into overtime.
After neither team scored in the first 15 minutes overtime period, the game went to a second and final session. With less than two minutes left in the game Lafayette's Jill Dozier broke free from the Wagner defense and placed a shot passed Marcy, giving the Leopards the 2-1 victory.
Wagner will be back on the field next against Howard University on Tuesday, August 31, at 4:00 PM at Wagner Stadium. Their home opening game is also part of the Seahawks Kicks For Cancer promotion, where all admission donations will benefit the American Cancer Society.
