Staten Island, NY – Sophomore
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson) posted a career-high seven goals to defeat the Marist College Red Foxes in the final game of the regular season on Sunday. The Seahawks finished the year at 16-19, with a 6-4 record against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents. Wagner will be the three-seed in next weekend's MAAC Championship Tournament. They will take on Iona College on Saturday in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Wagner finished the weekend 2-2 with wins over Marist on Sunday and Siena College on Saturday. The Seahawks suffered two one-goal losses to Iona, 13-12, and St. Francis (NY), 11-10.
The second of their two one-goal defeats happen Sunday afternoon against St. Francis (NY). In that game, the Seahawks took an early 6-2 lead thanks to back-to-back goals from sophomore
Lauren French (Shillington, PA/North Penn) and junior
Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin). A 5-0 run by the Terriers gave them a 7-6 lead at halftime and a 2-1 third period for the Seahawks evened the score at 8-8 headed into the final frame.
After an early score put the Terriers up 9-8, Beck added her second goal of the half to tie the game at 9-9 with six minutes remaining. A two-goal run from there was too much for the Seahawks to overcome. Junior
Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) chipped in with her second goal of half with 1:00 remaining, but that would be all in the 11-10 final.
Freshman
Katie Jordan (Westlake Village, CA/Agoura) and sophomore
Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) each had a goal in defeat, as well.
After dropping two straight, the Seahawks faced off against the Conference's only remaining unbeaten team, Marist College. Beck certainly seemed up to the tasking of cracking Marist's top-ranked defense – netting her first goal 1:57 into the game. Marist answered with consecutive goals, but Vanderbent was able to close the gap with her third goal of the day to make the score 2-2 after one period.
The Seahawks exploded for five goals in the second period, sparked by French's second goal of the game just seconds in. Junior
Carina Giles (Mohton, PA/Governor Miffling) and Vanderbent traded goals with the Red Foxes, but it was Beck's second and third scores of the game that put Wagner up 7-4 at halftime.
Wagner opened up a four-goal advantage in the third period, thanks to Beck's fourth goal and a sophomore
Molly Robinson's (Lansdale, PA/North) 19th marker of the season. Marist was able to score twice throughout the quarter to maintain the four-goal deficit.
A 3-2 Marist run in the final frame was offset by Beck's sixth and seventh goals of the game. The Seahawks' defensive stiffened in the later minutes to preserve the 12-9 win.
Senior goalie
Kelsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon/Fullerton JC) was masterful in net. She was honored before the game as the only senior playing in her final game.
Today marked the second straight year that Marist was unable to defeat Wagner in Spiro Sports Center. Their last victory on Staten Island came in 2008. The three-goal win is the largest margin of victory over the Red Foxes since April 9, 2006 – when the Seahawks beat Marist 11-4 in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Seven goals in a single game is a new career-high for Beck. Her previous-best was three goals in a game – which she had accomplished six times in her career. She finished the season scoring in 15 of the last 16 games.
Pyrz became the fifth Seahawk to register 100-career points this season. Pyrz crossed the mark with a goal in the third period against St. Francis (NY).
French finished with the team's regular season scoring title. French registered 55 goals – one ahead of Beck at 54. Vanderbent finished third with 49 markers, while Pyrz placed fourth with 36 goals.
Wagner's next game is on Saturday, April 24th against Iona College. A time for the contest will be available later this week.
