Water Polo Opens Up Cal Lutheran Tournament With 5-2 Win

Junior Natalie Pyrz Scored Twice in the Win
Thousand Oaks, CA – Jet Lag and a cross continental flight did not seem to affect the Wagner Water Polo team (5-7) as they opened up the Cal. Lutheran University Spring Classic with a 5-2 win over Cal. State Montery Bay.

The Seahawks put together a 2-0 lead through the half. The Otters finally got on the score board in the third period, but was not able to keep the Seahawks from scoring twice more to push the Wagner lead to 4-1. Each team exchanged goals in the final stanza of play, leading to the Seahawks fifth win of the season.

Juniors Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) and Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) continued their quests to 50 career goals as they both led the Seahawks with two goals each.

Pryz is now one goal away from 50 career scores while Vanderbent's two scores gives her 48 in her career and extends her consecutive scoring streak to seven games.

The only other Seahawk goal came from the hand of sophomore Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson) who's 15th goal of the season is only one back of the team leading 16 held by Vanderbent.

Senior Kelsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Fullerton JC) was glad to be back in her home state, posting 20 saves for her fifth win of the season. Rodgers' impressive effort between the pipes marks the third time this season that she has saved at least 20 goals in game while the two goals allowed is the fewest she has allowed this year.

The Seahawks are back in the pool with their fourth match-up against nationally ranked competition this season when they take on the #16 University of Pacific at 7:00 PM EST.
