Water Polo Drops 8-3 Decision to No. 16 Indiana

Bloomington, IN – The Wagner College Water Polo team (10-15, 0-0 MAAC) concluded their weekend with an 8-3 loss to the No. 16 ranked Indiana University Hoosiers. The Seahawks finished the Fluid Five Tournament with a 2-2 overall record with wins over Mercyhurst and Gannon on Saturday.

The Seahawks and Hoosiers matched goals early on 1-1, but Indiana pulled ahead in the second period with a 3-0 run to make the score 4-1 at halftime. Indiana added to the run with two more goals in the third period to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Wagner battled back with two goals in the final period, but it was not enough, as the Hoosiers were victorious 8-3.

Three different Seahawks scored in the loss – sophomore Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson), junior Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area), and junior Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin).

Beck was the only Seahawk to score in all four games this weekend. She currently stands second in the team standings with 33 goals and sports the longest active scoring streak at six consecutive games.

Pyrz led the team with eight goals this weekend – which included a season-best four goals in one game against Gannon. Pyrz stands fourth on the team with 25 tallies. Vanderbent, who currently leads the team with 36 markers, scored in nine of the last ten games. She had her season-best eight game scoring streak snapped against Michigan.
