Bloomington, IN – For the second time this season, the Wagner College Water Polo team (9-13, 0-0 MAAC) defeated the Mercyhurst College Lakers. The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Seahawks, as they head into their 2:30 PM match up with Gannon University.
Wagner held a 2-0 lead after one period then exploded for four goals in the second quarter to makes the score 6-2 at halftime. A 3-1 third period gave the Seahawks a commanding 9-3 lead. The six goal advantage was needed, as the Lakers came within two scores on a 5-1 four-quarter run. Still, Wagner was able to hold off the Lakers for the 10-8 win.
For the second time this season, junior
Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) led the team in scoring with three goals. Pyrz last scored three goals in a single game in Wagner's 8-7 loss to Bucknell on February 13th. Her three scores give Pyrz 120 career points. She has four multi-goal games this season.
Scoring two goals apiece in the victory were sophomore
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson), sophomore
Lauren French (Colmar, PA/North Penn), and junior
Carina Giles (Mohton, PA/Governor Mifflin). Sophomore
Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) added to her team-best 32 goals with a late goal. She has scored in seven straight games.
Senior goalie
Kelsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon/Fullerton JC) registered 12 saves in the win. It was her third consecutive game with double-digit saves.
