French Scores Twice in West Coast Finale

San Diego, CA – The Wagner College Water Polo team (8-13, 0-0 MAAC) concluded their west coast trip with a 9-4 loss to the No. 18 ranked Princeton University Tigers in the final day of the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, CA. The Seahawks leave California with a 4-6 record with wins over Cal. State University, Monterey Bay, Cal. Lutheran University, Whittier College, and Occidental College.

In their final game against the Tigers, Wagner fell into an early hole, 3-0 after one period. The two teams traded goals 1-1 in the second period and 2-2 in the third period to make the score 6-3 headed into the final frame. Princeton tacked on three more scores in the fourth quarter to secure the 9-4 win.

Sophomore Lauren French (Shillington, PA/North Penn) led the offense with two goals scored. French has six goals in the last five games and currently sits third on the team with 24 goals scored. Sophomore Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson) and junior Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) each had one goal in defeat.

Vanderbent scored in all six games this week – which included her career-high four-goal performance against Occidental. She has scored in 15 of the last 16 games and leads the team with 31 goals this season.

Beck found the back of the net in back-to-back games. Her score against Princeton is her 50th career marker. She is second on team with 28 goals.

Wagner is off until Saturday, March 27th when they travel to the Fluid Five in Bloomington, IN.
