San Diego, CA – Senior goalie
Kelsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon/Fullerton JC) registered nine saves in Wagner's 11-6 loss to the University of California, San Diego Tritons on Saturday in the opening round of the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, CA. Rodgers currently ranks second on Wagner's all-time saves list with 504 stops. She is the fastest goalie to reach the 500-save mark in program history.
An early 1-1 tie after one quarter did not last long as the Tritons outscored the Seahawks, 3-1 in the second period and 5-2 in the third quarter to take a commanding 9-4 lead. Wagner battled back in the final framing – netting two more scores, but UCSD's offense found the back of the net three more times for the 11-6 final.
Sophomores
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson) and
Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) each scored twice in the game, while sophomore
Lauren French (Shillington, PA/North Penn) and junior
Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) tacked on a goal apiece in defeat.
For Vanderbent, it was her sixth tally in the last three games. She currently leads the team with 28 goals scored – a new career best for third-year utility player.
The Wagner Water Polo team (8-10, 0-0 MAAC) is scheduled to play No. 14 ranked San Diego State University next at 5:15 PM (EST).
