Northridge, CA – The Wagner College Water Polo team (7-9, 0-0 MAAC) fell to the No. 10 ranked Cal. State University, Northridge Matadors on Thursday, 11-5. It was their first game of a Thursday doubleheader at the Matador Pool in Northridge, CA.
After a 1-1 first period, the Matadors scored seven unanswered goals to take a commanding 9-2 lead headed into the final quarter. The Seahawks outscored Cal. State, Northridge, 3-2 in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough as Wagner suffered the 11-5 loss.
The loss ended a two-game winning streak for the Seahawks. Entering today's contest the Wagner women were winners of four of their last five games.
Once again sophomore
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson) led the Seahawks offensively with three goals. Her three tallies extend her scoring streak to a career-high eight straight games. During this run, Beck has scored 13 of her 24 goals this season.
Also finding the back of the net for the Seahawks were junior
Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) and sophomore
Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA/North Penn). Vanderbent's tally brings her team-best total to 25.
Senior
Kelsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon/Fullerton JC) had 15 saves in net in defeat. Her 15 stops made her the second goalie in Wagner College history with 500-plus saves and the fastest to ever accomplish the feat. Rodgers ranks second on Wagner College's all-time list behind Katie Hauck's (2007) total of 1,050 stops.
The Seahawks' next match up is against Occidental College at 7:00 PM (EST).
