Fairfield, CT - Sacred Heart jumped out to a 31-7 halftime lead en route to a 38-22 victory over Wagner in the season-finale for both teams at Campus Field. In defeat, junior
David Crawford (Carrollton, TX / Hebron) led the way for the Seahawks with four receptions for 79 yards and two touchdowns.
In defeat, the Green & White ends the season at 5-6 and 3-5 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Pioneers finish up at 4-7 and 2-6 in the NEC.
Sophomore
Nick Doscher (Staten Island, NY / Moore Catholic) went 14-for-35 for 200 yards with a pair of touchdowns through the air while rushing for 27 yards on 12 carries. He finishes up the year with 2,074 yards passing, on 149 completions, and 672 yards rushing for 2,746 all-purpose yards, which is the second-best single-season total in Wagner history. His 2,074 passing yards and 149 completions each also rank eighth in the single-season Seahawk annals.
Crawford's big game highlights a standout season in which the Texas native led the squad in receptions (35), yards (629) and yards per catch (18.0 ypc) while hauling in three touchdowns.
Sacred Heart came out of the gate on fire, marching six plays on 71 yards in just 2:21 for the game's first score as Dale Fink evaded the Wagner blitz and found Garry Coles for a 19-yard touchdown pass. Jesper Fredriksson knocked home the extra point, making it 7-0 Pioneers with 12:33 to go in the first quarter.
Wagner would immediately answer on the ensuing possession. Senior
Frantz Placide (Miami, FL / Archbishop Curley Notre Dame) took the kickoff 37 yards to the Sacred Heart 44-yard line, giving the Seahawks excellent field position. Classmate
Eric Foxworth (Trenton, NJ / Holy Cross) then did the rest, rushing for 42 yards on three carries, capped by a 23-yard scoring scamper down the left sideline, tying the game up at 7-7 with 10:49 remaining in the first quarter after the
David Lopez (So., Plantation, FL / American Heritage) extra point.
Later in the quarter, senior
Kyle Muir (Spencerport, NY / Spencerport) pinned the Pioneers at the Wagner three-yard line with an outstanding pooch punt. Unfortunately, Sacred Heart rose to the challenge, driving 97 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Fink capped the drive with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Chris Nahat, giving the fifth-year quarterback the all-time NEC record for career passing yards. Fredriksson's extra point extended the lead out to 14-7 with 52 seconds remaining in the opening stanza.
Following a Seahawk three-and-out, the Pioneers added to the lead when Fink threw his third touchdown pass of the game, a five-yard scoring strike to Marcel Archer, extending the lead to 21-7 following the extra point at the 11:17 mark of the second quarter. Fink added his fourth touchdown pass of the half a short while later, hooking up with Rich Rossi on a 5-yard scoring strike, making it 28-7 after the extra point with 6:14 remaining in the half. Fredriksson capped the scoring in the opening half, kicking a 30-yard field goal with just 16 seconds remaining until intermission, giving the home team a 31-3 lead at halftime.
In the decisive first half, Fink was 21-of-27 for 306 yards and four touchdowns.
The Green & White would continue to fight in the second half as Doscher threw two touchdowns to Crawford, the first of which went 34 yards and the second 16 yards. Unfortunately, the first-half deficit was too much to overcome as Sacred Heart won its sixth-straight game at home over Wagner by the 38-22 count.
Foxworth also had a nice game on offense, rushing 10 times for 68 yards and a score while senior
Tyrone Collins (Geneva, NY / Geneva) finished his career with a three-catch, 43-yard performance.
On defense, senior #T.J. Czeski# (Amsterdam, NY / Amsterdam) led the way with 11 tackles and finished the season tied for second on the team with 74 tackles. Senior
Keith Davis (Harrisburg, PA / Bishop McDevitt) had 10 tackles while matching Czeski with 74 tackles on the year. Classmate
Stefen Gage (Syracuse, NY / Henninger) finishes the season as the team's leading tackler with 75 while adding a NEC-best five interceptions. Junior
Julian Stanford (Bloomfield, CT / Bloomfield) picked up a sack, giving the Nutmeg State native a NEC-best seven.
On special teams, Placide had another monster game, downing two balls inside the five-yard line, recording two tackles and returning three kicks for 71 yards, including a game-high 37 yarder in the first period that led to Wagner's first touchdown. Muir averaged 39.3 yards per kick on six punts, including placing two inside the five –yard line in his final collegiate game.
For Sacred Heart, Fink ended his collegiate career, going 31-of-45 for 395 yards and five touchdowns in the air. Archer added 121 yards on the ground while Coles snared five passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns.
