FINAL STATS
Washington, DC - Senior
Keith Davis (Harrisburg, PA / Bishop McDevitt) intercepted a pass on the first play of the second overtime and took it 80 yards to the house in propelling Wagner (3-2) to a rousing 22-16 come-from-behind victory over Georgetown (3-3) at Multi-Sport Field.
Allowing the Green & White a chance to win it in overtime was sophomore
David Lopez (Plantation, FL / American Heritage), who tied the game up at 13-13 with a booming 54-yard field goal just before the end of regulation.
In the first overtime each team traded field goals, with Lopez hitting a 24-yard field goal before Brett Weiss matched him with a 25-yard three-pointer.
Davis then intercepted a Scott Darby screen pass at the Georgetown 20-yard line before taking it 80 yards for the game-winning score.
Wagner entered the fourth quarter down 13-3 and looked to be in serious danger of letting the Hoyas deliver the dagger as sophomore
Nick Doscher (Staten Island, NY / Moore Catholic) threw his fourth interception of the game with just over 13 minutes to go in the game. However, the Seahawks' defense dug deep and forced a three-and-out.
After Wagner stalled on fourth down, Georgetown again was forced to punt after the Green & White defense stood strong. The offense took advantage of the opportunity driving 88 yards on 15 plays while taking 5:08 off the clock as Doscher found senior
Justin Matthews (Hillside, NJ / Hillside)
on a 15-yard scoring strike with 2:57 to go in the game. On the scoring drive, Doscher was 7-of-9 for 70 yards, including connecting with junior
David Crawford (Carrollton, TX / Hebron) four times for 42 yards.
The defense was then at it again as senior
Stefen Gage (Syracuse, NY / Henninger) picked off Darby at the Wagner 31-yard line before returning it 14 yards to the 45-yard line with 1:25 to play in the game. After the drive stalled at the Georgetown 32-yard line, Lopez lined up for a 49-yard field goal before a Green & White false start pushed it back five yards. Georgetown then tried to ice Lopez with a timeout to no avail as the Sunshine-State native booted the game-tying 54-yard score with six seconds remaining. The kick is the longest by a Seahawk since
Piotr Czech nailed a 56-yarder against Saint Francis (PA) on November 10, 2007 and the second furthest in school history.
Wagner got on the board in the third quarter on a 31-yard Lopez field goal before Weiss matched him with a 33-yard triple of his own, extending lead back out to 10 at 13-3.
The Seahawks went into half down just 10-0, but the damage could have been much worse had it not been for a missed field goal and a near safety. Doscher had a rough first half, going just 8-of-16 for 70 yards while throwing three crucial interceptions.
After both teams traded punts in the opening period, Georgetown advanced the ball to the Wagner 11 but came away empty handed when Weiss missed a 29-yard field goal. A Seahawk three-and-out yielded the Hoyas good field position as Georgetown would start at the Wagner 42-yard line and need just four plays to score the game's first touchdown as Darby ran 12 yards and Weiss booted home the extra point to make it 7-0 at the 5:02 mark.
Wagner would threaten on each of the next two possessions only to have them stall in Georgetown territory. After intercepting Doscher late in the second period, the Hoyas added a 29-yard Weiss field goal as time expired in the half and went into intermission up 10-0.
For the game, Doscher ended up 24-of-45 for 209 yards, including 16-of-29 for 139 yards after halftime, and a score. Crawford hauled in a career-high nine catches, including eight after halftime, for 75 yards while seniors
Tyrone Collins (Geneva, NY / Geneva) and Matthews each had three receptions.
The defense allowed just 64 yards after intermission, including just six yards in the fourth quarter as junior
Julian Stanford (Bloomfield, CT / Bloomfield) helped lead the charge with 2.5 sacks and now has a NEC-leading six on the season.
Gage added a team-best 11 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss, while intercepting his second pass of the year and forcing two fumbles.
Wagner is at Saint Francis (PA) on Saturday, October 16 at 2:00 pm.
