FINAL STATS

New Britain, CT -
Central Connecticut State went in front of Wagner 14-0 in the first quarter en route to a 38-20 victory over the Green & White at Arute Field. The Seahawks are now 4-4 and 2-3 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) and will again go for Walt Hameline's 200th career win next Saturday at 1:00 pm against Monmouth.

The Blue Devils improve to 6-2 and 5-0 in the NEC and will square off with Robert Morris next Saturday in Moon Township with first place in the league on the line. The victory was also the school-record 13th straight win at home and the 14th in 15 conference games dating back to 2008.

The Green & White were led by sophomore Nick Doscher (Staten Island, NY / Moore Catholic). The second-year signal caller rushed for 64 yards and two touchdowns on a career-best 29 carries while going 10-of-19 in the air for 112 yards and one touchdown. Senior Keith Davis (Harrisburg, PA / Bishop McDevitt) notched a team-best 12 tackles in his first start since returning from injury while junior Julian Stanford (Bloomfield, CT / Bloomfield) had 10 stops, including 3.5 tackles for loss.

Wagner was plagued by penalties yet again and were whistled for 123 yards of penalty yardage, compared to just 50 for CCSU.

In the early going, the Seahawks appeared poised to strike as graduate student Chris Jaeger (Sterling, VA / Potomac Falls) forced a fumble on the opening kickoff but the Green & White were unable to take advantage of the turnover. Following a Kyle Muir (Spencerport, NY / Spencerport) punt, the Blue Devils showed why they have one of the top offenses in the NEC, marching 83 yards on 12 plays as Chris Tolbert capped the scoring drive with a six-yard rushing touchdown. Joe Izzo knocked home the extra point, making it 7-0 with 8:29 to go.

After CCSU forced a three-and-out, the Blue Devils again sustained another long drive, going 82 yards in 13 plays while taking 5:43 off the clock. Everette Benjamin rushed for a three-yard touchdown, capping a 65-yard first quarter. Izzo applied the extra point, making it 14-0 with just 41 second remaining in the opening period.

The Wagner offense finally awoke, answering with a six-play, 50-yard scoring drive. Doscher had a hand in every play on the drive, rushing for 28 yards and throwing for 22 more before capping the drive with a six-yard spurt into the right side of the end zone. The David Lopez (So., Plantation, FL / American Heritage) extra point cut the deficit to 14-7 with 13:06 to go in the second quarter.

After each team turned in a three-and-out, CCSU got back on the board with Izzo's 11 field goal of the year, a 24 yarder with 3:46 to play in the half, extending the lead out to 17-7 following a 15-play, 53 yard drive that took 7:15 off the clock.

Later in the quarter, the Blue Devils got a major break on a Wagner punt when senior Frantz Placide (Miami, FL / Archbishop Curley Notre Dame) drilled Josue Paul at the CCSU five-yard line, forcing a fumble and coming up with the recovery with just over a minute remaining on the clock. However, Placide's big play was nullified due to a personal foul penalty on the Seahawks.

Despite being outgained by a 227-66 count, Wagner trailed just 17-7 at the half. After allowing Benjamin, the NEC's leading rusher, 65 yards on 13 carries in the opening period Malik Halls unit stopped him for no yards on five carries in the second period.

In the third period, CCSU took advantage of a pair of Wagner fumbles inextending the lead out to 31-7 on one more touchdown each from Tolbert and Benjamin.

The Seahawks would momentarily answer with a 10-play, 80-yard scoring drive, capped by Doscher's second touchdown of the game, a one-yard plunge on the final play of the third period, cutting the lead to 31-13 as the extra point was missed.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Josue Paul took the ensuing kickoff back 90 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead out to 38-13 following Izzo's fifth extra point of the game.

Wagner would tack on another score when Doscher found senior Justin Matthews (Hillsdale, NJ / Hillsdale) for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Lopez was successful on the PAT attempt while providing the final 38-20 tally.

Matthews hauled in a team-best three passes for 40 yards, joining Doscher as the top offensive performers. On the year, the senior wide receiver leads the Seahawks with 25 catches, 414 yards and five touchdowns.

Lost in the shuffle was senior Stefen Gage (Syracuse, NY / Corcoran), who intercepted his NEC-leading fifth pass of the year while adding eight tackles.

Leading the way for CCSU was Benjamin, who went over 100 yards for the fifth-straight game and the sixth of the year, finishing with 104 yards and two touchdowns. Tolbert added 23 yards on the ground and two scores as the Blue Devils finished with 297 yards of offense, almost 100 less than their league-leading average of 396.6 entering play.

On defense, CCSU had six sacks while forcing three fumbles, led by Charles Williams, who had 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles while holding Wagner to 193 yards of total offense.
