Seahawks Earn Tie Against Quinnipiac, 1-1

Box Score

Staten Island, NY –
Freshman goalkeeper Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY) recorded a career-high 10 saves against an offensive minded Quinnipiac team to help her team earn a, 1-1, tie in the Seahawks second conference game today at Wagner Stadium.

The Bobcats controlled possession from the opening kickoff, putting tremendous pressure on the Wagner backline. Quinnipiac totaled four shots in the first 10 minutes, with two of them on goal. Marcy denied the early opportunities, until the 12th minute, when a shot by Furtuna Velaj struck the right post, with the rebound popping out to Rebecca Kiting. Kiting easily placed her shot into the open net, while Marcy recovered from the initial chance, to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead.

The Seahawks began to earn their chances in the 29th minute after a deep throw-in by Katie Keown (Morris Plains, NJ) was chested down by Monica Zurich (Montvale, NJ). The sophomore then turned and side-volleyed her shot past an outstretched Jillian Kelley to even the score at one apiece.

Zurich had another quality bid late in the half, but her shot from the top of the 18-yard box sailed just over
the crossbar.

Heading into the halftime break, the Bobcats had a 12-4 shot advantage, and having earned three corner kick opportunities to the Seahawks none.

The second half saw back-and-forth action by both teams, as each squad recorded three shots on goal.
Wagner had the best scoring chance of the half after freshman Jackie Nicholas (Rockville Centre, NY) dribbled past a Bobcat defender and put a low cross through the box. Zurich was the intended receiver of the cross, for what would have been a tap in goal, but Quinnipiac's Amanda Bilas prevented the sophomore from her second goal of the game.

With neither team finding the net in the first 10 overtime session, the Seahawks readied for their second double-overtime game of the season.

It was Quinnipiac that tested Marcy in the first minute of the second OT period, as Velaj found a shooting lane and blasted a shot from 20 yards out that tipped off the cross bar and deflected just over the frame.

Neither team could put together a winning goal, as the game-ending tie moved the Seahawks to 4-7-1 in overall play and 0-1-1 in the Northeast Conference. Quinnipiac leaves Staten Island with a 3-4-1 record and 1-0-1 in the NEC.

The Seahawks wrap up their three-game home stretch on Sunday, when they play host to Central Connecticut State University at 1:00 pm. At Sunday's game, the Green and White will host a fundraiser for a Staten Island native who was wounded in his service in Iraq. All donations at the game will go directly to the Brendan Marrocco Road To Recovery Trust.
