Wagner Soccer Loses To Holy Cross, 3-1

Sophomore Briana Vassallo

Staten Island, NY- The Wagner College women's soccer team fell to the Holy Cross Crusaders (1-7-0) this afternoon at sunny Wagner College Stadium by a score of 3-1. Briana Vassallo (Saddle Brook, NJ/ Paramus Catholic) scored the lone Seahawks' goal as the Green & White brings its record to 2-4-1 on the season.

Both teams struggled to put a score on the board as the first half ended in a 0-0 draw. It was the Crusaders' Shelby Stand that broke the deadlock in the 49th minute to capture the lead from a shot 20 yards out. Seconds later the Seahawks responded as Vassallo cashed in a goal from 10 yards out to tie the game 1-1. Assisting Vassallo was junior midfielder Dominique Bonura (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/ Immaculate Heart) recording her first assist of the season.

Wagner's only goal would not be enough as the Crusaders' Katherine Donnelly deposited two unassisted goals to give them win. Donnelly's first goal came from fifteen yards out in the 54th minute and then scored again in the 59th minute off her own rebound.

Vassallo's goal gives her three on the season as she ties the Seahawks leader Diane Gantenhammer (South Farmingdale, NY/ Farmingdale). She also bested the team in shots for the game with four.

The Seahawks finished close behind the Crusaders in the shots category, 14-12. As for corner kicks, Wagner led with three while Holy Cross had 0.

In goal, Samantha Schueschner (Brookfield, CT/ Brookfield) made her season premier by going the entire 90 minutes in between the pipes. Schueschner grabbed seven saves as she earned the loss in the match.

The Seahawks return to action Friday, September 26 as they host the Jaspers of Manhattan College. Start time is set for 4 pm.
