Wagner Drops 17-8 Women's Lax Decision to First Place Sacred Heart

Staten Island, NY - Junior midfielder Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) and sophomore midfielder Teri Noll (Jordan, NY/ Jordan-Ellbridge Central) scored three goals apiece but Sacred Heart was able to overcome a 4-2 deficit in posting a 17-8 victory over Wagner.

With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 9-5 overall and remained atop the Northeast Conference standing with a 6-0 league mark while Wagner fell to 1-10, 1-4 in NEC play.

Trailing 2-1 early, Wagner threw a scare into Sacred Heart by scoring three consecutive goals. A Gonzalez tally (19:48) off an assist by junior midfielder Kelly Blundin (Plymouth Meeting, PA/ Plymouth Whitemarsh) tied the game at 2-2. A goal by junior midfielder Jessica Richmond (Jenkintown, PA/ Jenkintown) off another Blundin assist (18:17)pushed Wagner ahead 3-2. The Seahawks then increased their lead o 4-2 when Gonzalez converted a free position shot with 17:02 left in the opening half.

The Pioneers responded by rattling off eight answered goals over the next 12:11 to seize a commanding 10-4 lead. Noll ended the Sacred Heart scoring spree with an unassisted goal with 4:00 left in the first half to make it 10-5. After Sacred Heart went up 11-5, Wagner countered with a goal by Gonzalez off an assist by freshman midfielder Carly Lyster (Oakhurst, NJ/ Ocean Township) followed by an unassisted goal by Blundin with four seconds left in the half which sliced the deficit to 11-7 at the intermission.

When Noll opened the second half scoring with an unassisted tally at the 26:42 mark, the Seahawks were within three goals at 11-8. But this is as close as Wagner would get as Sacred Heart closed the game by scoring six consecutive goals.

Jessica Ingrilli paced the Pioneers with five goals while Carissa Hauser added four goals and one assist. Amanda Williams wound up with three goals, Meghan McCaffery finished with two goals while Mary Montesarchio chimed in with a goal and a game-high four assists. Chelsea Wagner had 11 saves in goal for the Pioneers.

In addition to the hat tricks turned in by Gonzalez and Noll, Wagner received a one-goal, two-assist outing from Blundin while Richmond and Lyster finished with one assist apiece. Junior Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius) played the first 46:26 in goal and recorded five saves while junior Amy Jones (Jarretsville, MD/ North Harford) had one save while playing the final 13:34.

Sacred Heart out-shot Wagner by a slim 29-27 count while the teams each recorded 18 ground balls. Sacred Heart won 15-27 draw controls and was 3-8 on free-position shots while Wagner was 1-5 on free-position shots.

The Seahawks are next in action on Sat., April 12 when they travel to New Britain, CT to meet Central Connecticut State in a 1:00 pm contest.
