Seahawks Split Doubleheader at Yale with 2-1 Win in Game Two

April 23, 2008

Stats

New Haven, CT - Senior infielder Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV/Wooster) once again came up huge for the Seahawks as her fifth inning two-RBI double broke a scoreless tie as sophomore starter Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA/Temecula Valley) had another strong pitching outing and Wagner got past Yale in the second game of a doubleheader, 2-1, at William O. DeWitt Family Field. The Seahawks split the double-dip with the Bulldogs on the day and move to 26-17 overall on the season.

In the bottom of the sixth and with two Yale batters already retired it looked as if Wagoner wouldn't be able to finish out the great bid she had started when she took a shot off her leg right up the middle.

But the California native toughed it out and, after handing it off to sophomore Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV/McQueen) who secured the game with the save (4), got credit for her ninth victory of the season - now the team-leader in the category at 9-4.

Through six-and-a-third innings Wagoner gave up one run on 12 hits while walking only one.

The deciding runs in the contest game on that definitive Lazzari two-RBI single when she found a gap on the left side of the infield and drove it past the Bulldog gloves to bring freshman outfielder Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV/Reno) and senior shortstop Katie Stevens (Reno, NV/Wooster) across the plate for her 52nd and 53rd RBI of the season - good enough not only for the team-lead and the all-time Wagner mark but also for tops in the Northeast Conference.

The Seahawks now head back to Staten Island for a few days off before they traverse across the Verrazano Bridge on Saturday afternoon to take on the first-place Blackbirds of Long Island University.
