Staten Island, NY - The Wagner water polo team ended the regular season an even 15-15 (5-5 MAAC) after defeating St. Francis (NY) 10-7 while not being able to find a win against Marist College, losing 14-8. The Seahawks finish out the season in third place and will battle #2 Iona in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament on Saturday, April 26.
In game one, senior Amber McMichael (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) got things cooking with a goal within the first minute of play. But back came the Terriers, notching up the game at one after using a 5m penalty shot for the tie and took the lead seconds later with a quick goal. The Seahawks were able to bring the game to 2-2 with a goal coming from the hands of senior Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/University of San Diego) but were unable to find the back of the net for the rest of the quarter. St. Francis, on the other hand, could not miss and rallied three more goals by the end of the quarter and led 5-2.
The Green & White steadied their defense and allowed zero goals in both the second and third quarters. Their goal production was not to find the same fate as the Terriers' as they scored two in the second and three in the third and took a 7-5 lead into the final stanza of play. In the fourth, the Seahawks held off the Terriers efforts, netting three goals to St. Francis' two and coming out the victor 11-7.
Hoelck had herself a career day in the win, netting four goals on seven shots while dishing out two assists. On the other side of the game, Hoelck held steady on defense and stole four while tallying five field blocks.
Senior Lindsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Fullerton JC) notched two goals as McMichael, junior Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) and freshmen Carina Giles (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) and Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) each had one goal. Senior Yvette Viramontes (Montebello, CA/Rio Hondo) also pitched in with three assists.
Kristen Spector (Camp Hill, PA/Cumberland Valley) held her own in goal by saving nine in the win.
Game two pitted the Green & White against their conference rival Marist College in front of a packed pool at the Spiro Sports Center. The Red Foxes ran with a 4-2 lead going into the second quarter and eventually went up 6-3 by halftime. Things did not fair better for the Seahawks in the third as their three goals were overshadowed by Marist's six. With a 12-6 lead going into the final quarter, the Red Foxes worked the clock as the two teams each netted two goals, ending the game 14-8.
Senior Camille Karimzad (Walnut Creek, CA/Campolindo) and Hoelck teamed up for two goals a piece while Tomlinson, Rodgers, Pyrz and junior Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City) netted one each. Spector made seven saves.
