Water Polo Unable to Complete Season Sweep; Fall to Iona 14-9

April 19, 2008

Box Score

Brooklyn Heights, NY - After defeating the Siena Saints, the Wagner water polo team was unable to make it two wins for the day as they fell to the Iona Gaels 14-9 and fell back down to an even 14-14 on the year and to 4-4 in Metro Atlantic Athletic League (MAAC) play. With the loss, the Seahawks and Gaels split the season series.

The first quarter was a goal-filled eight minutes of play as the Gaels were able to find the back of the net twice before senior Camille Karimzad (Walnut Creek, CA/Campolindo) put one on the board for the Green & White. Senior Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/University of San Diego HS) scored next for the Seahawks but her goal was countered with three more from the potent Iona offense, sending the Seahawks into the second quarter with a three goal deficit. Things slowed down in the second, though it was the Gaels coming out on top, scoring two goals to Wagner's one and ending the first half with a 7-3 lead over the Seahawks.

Things started to look brighter in the second half as junior Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) netted two goals in the beginning of the third. But on came the Gaels who countered with four goals of their own to take an 11-5 lead. In the final stanza, Wagner's four goals topped Iona's three but was ultimately handed a 14-9 loss in the end.

Hoelck, Tomlinson and Karimzad were at the forefront of the Green & White offense with two goals each. Seniors Lindsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Fullerton JC), Yvette Viramontes (Montebellow, CA/Rio Hondo) and freshman Laura vanderBent (Shillington, PA/Mifflin) each netted one goal a piece while junior Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City) and freshman Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) each had three assists.

Freshman goalie Kristen Spector (Camp Hill, PA/Cumberland Valley) saved two and had one steal in the contest.

Sunday brings the Seahawks their final two games of the regular season as they battle two teams that they have not defeated yet this season. The first show down will begin at 9:00 AM against the Terriers of St. Francis (NY) and the final game against conference rival Marist College is slated for a 3:00 PM start. All game will take place at the Seahawks home pool in the Spiro Sports Center.
