Wagner Finds Revenge Against Siena 11-10

April 19, 2008

Box Score

Brooklyn Heights, NY - The Wagner water polo team defeated the Siena Saints 11-10 in a nail-biting fight to the finish. With the win, the Seahawks improve to 14-13 and 4-3 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.

Wagner came into the game with a thirst for revenge as the Saints defeated the Green & White in their first meeting this season 14-12 in overtime. In the first quarter of this one, the Seahawks started out fierce, scoring four times to Siena's two. Wagner took their momentum into the second stanza and matched the Saints' two goals with two of their own, ending the first half up 6-4.

With things looking their way, the Seahawks entered the second half with high spirits that were brought immediately down as the Saints scored three uncontested goals. But before the quarter came to a close, senior Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/University of San Diego HS) found the back of the net to tie the game at sevens.

In the fourth, the Saints felt the wrath of junior Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) who scored her lone goal within the first 22 seconds of the period. Tomlinson's goal was part of her own person score she had to settle as she had not seen any action in the pool since her last meeting with the Saints where she broke her nose in the first minute of play. Her goal was followed by another Hoelck goal, this time coming from junior Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City) who dished the ball out to Hoelck for a one-two punch into the net.

A 9-7 score in favor of the Green & White did not settle well with the Saints as they came marching down the length of the pool for two goals, notching up the game at 9-9. Wagner and Siena exchanged goals once again, tying the game at 10-10 until Hoelck scored her fifth and final goal within the last minute of play, giving Wagner the lead and ultimately winning the game 11-10.

Hoelck's five goals topped the Seahawk offense while Maichrowicz chipped in with two goals and one assist. Tomlinson and seniors Lindsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Fullerton JC), Camille Karimzad (Walnut Creek, CA/Campolindo) and Amber McMichael (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) rounded out the scoring for Wagner with one goal a piece.

Freshman goalie Kristen Spector stoned 10 shots in the contest while the Seahawks had a season high nine field blocks.

Wagner will battle Iona College in game two of the Saturday double-header at 5:30 PM. The Green & White beat the Gaels already this season 12-11 and look to repeat their success on Saturday night.
