Wagner Defeats CCSU 17-13 in Women's Lacrosse

New Britain, CT - Junior midfielder Kelly Blundin (Plymouth Meeting, PA/ Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored five goals and added two assists while junior attacker Jessica Richmond (Jenkintown, PA/ Jenkintown) tallied four goals and two assists to power the Wagner women's lacrosse team to a come-from-behind 17-13 Northeast Conference victory over Central Connecticut State.

With the win, the Seahawks improve to 2-10 on the season, 2-4 in the NEC while the Blue Devils fall to 1-11, 1-6 in league play. Wagner junior midfielder Lindsay Hashmall (Wantagh, NY/ Wantagh) scored the game's first goal 1:09 into play but CCSU scored four of the next five goals to take a 4-2 lead. The Blue Devils led 7-6 at halftime and scored the first goal of the second half, just 11 seconds into the final stanza, to seize an 8-6 lead.

The Seahawks then rallied for four consecutive goals to take the lead for good as Richmond scored two goals during this game-changing four-goal splurge. CCSU then scored to make it 10-9 and again Wagner responded, this time rattling off three unanswered goals to build a 13-9 cushion with 15:58 to play. CCSU would get as close as 13-11 on a goal by Stephanie John with 5:48 left in the game but again Wagner had an answer, countering with four straight goals to put the game away.

Hashmall and freshman attacker Karen Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY/ Skaneateles) finished with two goals apiece for the Seahawks.junior midfielder Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY. Westhill) led Wagner in draw controls with four, while adding a goal and two assists in the win.

Sophomore midfielders Teri Noll (Jordan, NY/ Jordan-Elbridge Central), who also had a goal and an assist, and Alyssa Prima (Medford Lakes, NJ/ Shawnee) each had four ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius) stopped six shots.

Wagner finished the game with a 47-23 advantage in shots and also had 32 ground balls to Central Connecticut's 19. Draw controls were even at 16-16.

Junior Stephanie John, sophomore Lyndsey Mastandrea and freshman Michele Conway each had four goals for Central Connecticut State. Blue Devil junior Alice Lee stopped 19 shots in goal.

Wagner is next in action on Tue., April 15 when the Seahawks host Bucknell of the Patriot League in a 3:30 pm contest.
