Iwicki Sets Career Mark as Seahawks Sweep Doubleheader from Monmouth with 4-3 Win

April 12, 2008

Stats

West Long Branch, NJ - Senior Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) became Wagner's all-time doubles leader with a two-bagger in the top of the sixth inning as the Seahawks held on for a 4-3 victory sweeping the Monmouth Hawks in Northeast Conference doubleheader action this afternoon. They move to 16-15 overall and 5-5 in the NEC.

Iwicki also stole the show on the mound as she earned her first career pitching victory by throwing five and a third after getting the nod to start from Head Coach Glen Payne for the second time in a week after not taking the ball for the Seahawks since her sophomore year.

The New Jersey native - the usual regular rightfielder for the Green & White - gave up just a pair of earned runs on seven hits and two walks.

The Seahawks took control of the ballgame without hesitation in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from junior infielder Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV/Wooster) and a pair of RBI on a double from junior designated player Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ/Paramus Catholic).

The home Hawks almost tied the ballgame in their last turn at bat in the bottom of the seventh when they had the bases loaded with one out. Fortunately for the Seahawks, Eshelman - who earned her second save on the day - came in to preserve the victory getting the last Monmouth batter to fly out to Iwicki in right field.

Iwicki's 44th double of her career broke the previous record held by Marie Bianca (2001-2004) who finished her Wagner career with 43.

The Seahawks now get ready for a doubleheader tomorrow as they travel to Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
