Villanova, PA - The Wagner water polo team went 1-1 this weekend with a 16-9 win over the Villanova Wildcats while falling to the Marist Red Foxes16-7 in the second weekend of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. Wagner stays at an even 13-13 for the year and is 3-3 in the MAAC.
In game one against first place Marist, the Seahawks kept up with the Red Foxes and were only in a two goal deficit at the end of the first quarter with score of 5-3. But in the second, Marist pulled away netting five goals to Wagner's two from junior Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City). In the third, Wagner came out firing as the national leader in goals-per-game senior Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/University of San Diego) was the first to notch a goal. This did not settle well in the Red Foxes' stomachs as they came back to score four uncontested goals and bringing a 14-6 lead into the final stanza of play. In the fourth, the scoring was scarce as Marist netted two goals while the Seahawks scored once, ending the game 16-7.
Hoelck and Maichrowicz were the only Seahawks to find the back of the net with Hoelck netting four and Maichrowicz ending the game with three. Freshman goalie Kristen Spector (Camp Hill, PA/Cumberland Valley) saved three in the contest.
The second game of the day faired much better for the Green & White as they took an early 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter against the Wildcats. All was the same in the second quarter as the Seahawks surmounted a charge of four goals to Villanova's one, sending a 9-3 score in favor of Wagner into the half. In the third, Villanova came with arms blazing, netting the first three goals of the quarter. By the end of the quarter, the Wildcats were able to earn one goal back from the Seahawks with their five goals to Wagner's four. But in the fourth, the Green & White sealed the deal with three goals while Villanova was only able to score once and closing out the game with a score of 16-9.
Once again Hoelck led the way for the Seahawks with four goals and one assists. Freshman Laura vanderBent (Shillington, PA/Mifflin) pitched in with three goals and two assists while seniors Camille Karimzad (Walnut Creek, CA/Campolindo) and Amber McMichael (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) each netted two goals while dishing out one assist. Other Seahawk scorers include seniors Yvette Viramontes (Montebello, CA/Rio Hondo) and Lindsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Fulleton JC), junior Dru Murphy (Keller, TX/Slippery Rock) and freshmen Carina Giles (Mohton, PA/Mifflin) and Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) who each found the back of the net once. Pyrz also added three assists to her offensive totals.
Spector split time with Murphy in net as the freshman pulled away with two saves in the first half while Murphy nabbed three saves in the second half of play.
Next up for Wagner is a two game series in Brooklyn Heights, NY where the Seahawks will face Siena and Iona. The Siena match-up is slated for a 1:00 PM start while the game against the Gaels is set to begin at 5:30 PM.
These are not the only two games for the Seahawks next weekend as they will host the MAAC in the final games of the regular season. The Green & White will battle St. Francis (NY) at 9:00 AM while they will take on Marist at 3:00 PM. All games will be held in the bottom floor of the Spiro Sports Center.
