Rock Hill, SC - Winthrop jumped out to an early 8-1 lead before hanging on for a 10-6 victory over Wagner in the first of four games between the two teams. The Eagles have won three-straight and are now 6-14 while the Green & White has lost four-straight to move to 4-7.
Winthrop struck first with three runs in the opening frame. Bonomi singled down the left field line and Eddie Tinsdale followed with an infield hit. The pair moved up to second-and-third on a wild pitch before Bonomi scored on a balk. Tinsdale scored on a hit off the bat of the Billy Froehlich. Froehlich stole second and scored on an Eddie Rohan single to cap the Eagles' three-run first.
Sophomore Kevin Payne (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter's) got Wagner on the board in the third with a solo home run to right field to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Winthrop responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning with a three-run home run to right off the bat of Bryn Henderson to push its lead out to 6-1. The Eagles would use the long-ball in the fourth when Bonomi hit a two-run shot to deep right-center, making it 8-1.
Wagner would get one back in the sixth when Vin Avella (Matatawan, NJ / CBA) clouted his team-best third home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center.
In the bottom of the frame, the Eagles extended their lead back out to seven again at 9-2 when Bonomi struck again with a RBI single.
Winthrop starter Ryan Schwartz was cruising, yielding just two runs, and was one out away from finishing his eighth inning of work when the Seahawks began their rally.
Sophomore Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) chased Schwartz with an infield single. Casey Bradwell then walked junior Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) on four-straight balls. The pair moved up to second-and-third on a wild pitch before McDonnell scored and Drechsel moved to third on another wild pitch. Freshman Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) blasted a 3-2 offering to left-center to cut the deficit to 9-4. After another pitching change, pinch-hitter sophomore Tom DiPietro (Staten Island, NY / Felician) drew a walk and freshman Jack Rice (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) blasted a two-run pinch-hit double to left, cutting the lead to 9-6. Matteo D'Angelo entered and quelled the Wagner rally with a strikeout.
John Murrian hit Winthrop's third homer of the day to provide the final count of 10-6 while D'Angelo picked up his first save of the year with a perfect ninth.
McDonnell went 2-4 while freshman Matt Logan (Wall, NJ / Wall) was a perfect 2-2 to lead Wagner on offense. Also standing out were Avella and Payne, who each hit solo home runs, and Rice, who delivered a big pinch-hit two-run double.
Bonomi was 3-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs while Henderson went 2-4 with a three-run home run to lead the home team. Ryan Schwartz picked up the win, striking out five, against just one walk, while yielding three runs on seven hits through 7.2 innings.
Junior Andy Wells (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter's) struck out four and gave up eight runs over 4.0 innings in falling to 0-2 on the year.
The two teams meet again tomorrow at 4 pm.
