Terryn Marette (Chevy Chase, MD/ Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and sophomore
Jessica Balling (Seaford, NY/ MacArthur) and a gritty team defensive effort carried the Wagner College women's soccer team to a 2-0 season-ending win over Mount Saint Mary's this afternoon at Wagner College Stadium.
The Seahawks got the ball rolling in the ninth minute of the game when Marette scored her first career from 20 yards to give Wagner the early lead. Balling built the lead to 2-0 when she deposited the team's final goal in the 14th minute of the half from the right side of the goal, 20 yards out. In the second half, neither team was able to tally another goal as the Seahawks ended the season on a positive note.
In goal,
Leslie Reed (Indian Harbour Beach, FL/ Satellite), one of five Seahawks who were honored in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony, finished off her Seahawk career with a win as she went the entire 90 minutes, recording seven saves.
For the game, Wagner bested the Mountaineers in the shots category 18-13. Wagner also led in corner kicks 5-4.
The Seahawks finish the 2008 season with a record of 4-11-4, 2-6-1 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Mount falls to 2-16-1, 1-7-1 in the NEC.
The four Seahawk seniors, in addition to Reed, who ended their careers with a victory included midfielder
Diane Gantenhammer (South Farmindale, NY/ Farmingdale) and backs
Josefine Allain (Centerville, MA/ Barnstable),
Stephanie Burnett (Cocoa Beach, FL), and
Kendra White (West Kings Kingston, RI/ West Kingston).
